De roof van de Sabijnse maagden:
Giambologna werd als Jean (de) Boulogne geboren in Frans Vlaanderen en werd o.m. in Antwerpen als beeldhouwer opgeleid. Ook werkte hij als leerling van Jacques Dubrœcq aan de Sint-Waltrudiskerk te Bergen (België) en trok na deze opleiding in 1554 in gezelschap van Cornelis Floris naar Italië om aldaar antieke sculpturen en werken van Michelangelo te bestuderen.

Zo goed als de rest van zijn leven werkte hij aan het hof van de Medici in Florence. Hij realiseerde de maniëristische idealen in zijn levensgrote sculpturen en zijn bronzen waren gedraaid in moeilijke posities en waren vaak zwaar en gespierd.

Het werk van Giambologna is veel gebruikt door opvolgers als lesmateriaal en heeft zelfs in de barokke periode nog invloed gehad.

Hello Albrecht,

This is as good a depiction of Giambologna's great statue as I've seen anywhere, certainly comparable to the best art history books. The note is highly informative and well written. I am glad you cleaned up the background, presenting the great work of art as an isolated entity, devoid of electrical cables draped on walls. The great German physicist, Werner Heisenberg, once said, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a man to see/hear what he already knows." Well, this gives me great pleasure, I have been in Florence many times, and I was in Tuscany just about the same time you took this photo.

Hi Albrecht. A fine POV of this most famous statue in the main square in Florence. The colours are good. Maybe oversharpened a touch as some of the edges are a little fuzzy, or maybe through the necessary shrinking to the 800 max size. TFS, Murray.
