Photographer's Note
Obviously all tourists go to Pisa to see the tower, and almost all miss a visit to this church on the outskirts, much older than all the others. The basilica of San Pietro Apostolo, in the locality of San Piero a Grado, is a basilica of Pisa. An admirable example of ecclesiastical architecture prior to the Pisan cathedral, the suggestive basilica was built near a disappeared river port, called Grado, of the ancient Porto Pisano, where according to tradition St. Peter would have landed in the year 44.
Its peculiar feature is that of having 2 apses and no facade. The interior is full of ancient frescoes that I will show you in the next post. In the WS a different view and a ... surprise.

Hello Luciano, I like this view of the end of the Basilica, it's only when I look at the workshop picture that I realise just how large the building really is.
There are some lovely details.
Excellent sharpness, the colours and textures of the stones are lovely.
Very informative note.
Kind regards, Jean.

Bonsoir Luciano,

Belo trabalho meu amigo.

Buongiorno Luciano,
Excellent frontal POV upon the old church, well managed the side light and its shaded part. Good scale achieved with the person passing ay its foot.
Indeed, a less known place for tourists.
Wish you a nice weekend,

Hello Luciano,
I think this happens everywhere, that all tourists see one place regarded "a must", and miss places that are just as interesting. In the Louvre the room showing the Mona Lisa is hopelessly packed, so that nobody can watch the painting properly, but the paintings by Leonardo in the corridor outside are hardly seen by anyone.
This is a very interesting and special church, and I'm sorry to admit I didn't see it either. ;-) This is the most interesting composition, but the WS gives us a better view. The other WS is also interesting. I remember seeing similar marks in Florence in 1969 from a disaster a few years earlier.
Best regards,
Gert

Ciao Caro Luciano,
It is interesting to learn the full size of the church, as shown in your w/s, but I agree with you, this is the more interesting of the two, giving us a close-up of the cylindrical shapes, the detailed stone patterns and textures of the stones.
The striding figure is useful for size comparisons.
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello Luciano,
It would be a pity to fail to visit such a beautiful old church like this one. The old stone walls look great and you captured their textures really well. I really like the play of light and shadow as well in this fine sidelight.

this building has special shapes with similar aspects with the traditional famous buildings of the city. we can see how the stones are different, looks like they used parts of other ancient stones to built it.
when a river get a mark it will reach it again some day in the future.
here very hot, humid and we got a storm few time ago, there is a hug cyclone in uruguay and one of the branches is feeding it crossing my region.
take care

Hello Luciano,
I think that most tourists want to see as much as possible of all the very famous spots in their Italian trip. Everyone in the world knows the Piazza dei Miracoli and thinks that after that visit one can leave the city of Pisa.
In that sense, it's good that you and Carlo before show us other beautiful monuments of the city.
There is of course the fact that most Italian places have so much history and culture to offer that we have to make choices.
Your main photo shows the basilica of San Pietro Apostolo in a most attractive way.
From that point of view it doesn't seem easy to get the entire construction in the frame. But you managed it.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Luciano, It is fantastic to have such guides in Pisa like Carlo and Cristina. I also visited many places in Pisa outside the usual tourists' route. I haven't seen this interesting church though. Such marks indicating the level of the flood are always impressive and quite incredible. excellent symmetric composition. My favourite in Pisa is Piazza dei Cavalieri. have you been there?
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Luciano,
Many tourists run from highlight to highlight and take some pictures there and don't know what kind of beauty they miss.
Fortunately, there are also photographers like you who have also attention for the less popular but often more interesting environment.
Well done
Have a nice Sunday, Groet Rob

Ciao Luciano,

Hi Luciano.
Three stupendous works on this magnificent church, it amazes its large size, ideally those three apses and the ornament of arches that runs around the entire perimeter of the church in its upper part, very curious that kind of low tower that we see exempt from the construction.
Its interior must be very wide and tall.
Magnificent composition and color.
Excellent brightness and sharpness.
Well done. I love the picture.
Have a good week.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Ciao Luciano,
There is so much beauty on the facade of this old church. I like all the different stones, the small windows, and the curves. It's nice that at least one person was walking by. It shows just how large this structure is. Take care!
