Sillane substructures - Spoleto (PG)

They are located in Via dello Spagna, along a stepped path that leads to the tiny widening of the Vicolo Leoncilli.
They were excavated in 1963 and probably date back to the period of Lucio Cornelio Silla, 1st century BC.
It is a masonry ambulatory made of limestone blocks, with nine arches and ten pillars, about 30 meters long. For about 20 meters the path is straight, then turns almost at right angles to the right. The external side is supported by powerful arches which rest on square pillars and are opened by narrow splayed slits; the barrel vault is in concrete.
Popular tradition, not without credibility, leads it back to the remains of the mythical and unknown palace of Theodoric, which was later to host the powerful Lombard Dukes of Spoleto.

This is a fascinating old building and it's surprisingly well maintained. I like the plain walls, the good light and the strong vertical accent of the photo.
