Photographer's Note

Military items related to the battle, likely spoils of war, including arrows, helmets, shields and swords. A detail photo of a bas relief carving from Trajan's Column, near the Via dei Foro Imperiali. This ancient column commemorates Trajan's victory over the Dacians, dating to the 2nd c. AD. It's one of the most astounding works of art which survives from the ancient world. Consisting of circular bands, the panels each depict a different event from Trajan's campaign. It provides startling detail information which would otherwise be lost to us, particularly about the ancient Roman legions.
