Riace's bronzes
The Bronzes of Riace, considered among the most significant testimonies of classical Greek art, are two bronze statues depicting two naked men, originally armed with shields and spears, which have become symbols of the city of Reggio Calabria. The statues are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria. The Bronzes were found in 1972, in an exceptional state of conservation, on the bottom of the Ionian Sea, near the town of Riace Marina, by a passionate diver during a dive about 200 m from the coast and at a depth of 8 m. The hypotheses on the origin, on the dating and on the authors of the statues are different. Probably dating back to the mid-fifth century. BC, it was assumed that the Bronzes had been thrown overboard during a storm to lighten the ship carrying them or that the boat itself had sunk with the statues. A first restoration took place in the years 1975-80 in Florence, where, in addition to cleaning and preserving the external surfaces, the interior began to be emptied from the original melting earth. The Riace Bronzes are 1.98 and 1.97 meters high and weigh 160 kg. They depict two completely naked men, with beards and curly hair, their left arms bent, and their right arms stretched along their sides. Both wore a helmet, wielded a spear or sword in their right hand and held a shield with their left arm, elements disassembled at the time of embarkation to allow the statues to rest on their backs and facilitate their transport.
