Schioppo - Scheggino (PG)rnrnThe locality of Schioppo rises 475 meters above sea level, a transit villa crossed by an ancient path that connected Spoleto to Ceselli and Monteleone through Castelmonte, takes its name from the "rock", in Latin Scopulus, the large rocky wall that looms on the country. The locality has been inhabited since prehistoric times, on the walls of the Riparo dello Schioppo paintings were found, thirty-one in black and one in red, mostly schematic scaliform, associated with anthropomorphic, in a context dated between the Neolithic and the 'Metal Age, compatible with the late Copper Age or the early Bronze Age.rnrnThe settlement, grouped around the parish church, is dominated by a large tower house with a dovecote, which in ancient times probably had defense and sighting functions.rnA “valchiera” was active in the town until the end of the 19th century, which exploited the waters of a rich spring and was also used by neighboring towns to wash and dye fabrics.rnFrom an administrative point of view, Schioppo depended on the castle of Ceselli, whose fate it has always followed, until it merged with the Municipality of Scheggino.rnUntil 2006 there were only two inhabitants in the village, mother and daughter, Giuseppa Rossi 95 and daughter Maria, when Mrs. Giuseppa died, the daughter is gone and the small settlement is completely deserted.
