Mortella
The Lady Walton Garden Museum, commonly known as La Mortella, is a garden created by Susana Walton, wife of the English composer William, in Forio, in the western part of the island of Ischia. The couple moved to Forio d’Ischia immediately after the Second World War, creating a wonderful garden from scratch. Today there is a foundation that manages La Mortella by organizing concerts and artistic programs within the garden; inside the garden it is also possible to visit the museum with the manuscripts of Walton's scores and the puppet theater by Lele Luzzati.
Today La Mortella is composed of two profoundly different parts: The Valley designed by Russell Page, characterized by a subtropical climate, humid and protected from the wind, and the Collina or upper garden, entirely conceived and developed by Lady Walton, with sunny and beaten areas from the wind and characterized by vegetation from the Mediterranean areas. Since 1990 the garden has been open to the public.
