Tree, a photo from Gelderland, North

Photographer's Note

I took this picture two weeks ago during a cycle-tour in the 'Ooijpolder', close to Nijmegen. I lost my way in this desolated, but very nice area. These grounds are in use for the winning of materials for producing bricks. In the distance you can discover the slihouet of such a factory.

Hello Huub,

The b&w treatment does add to the sense of desolation that you describe in your note. But this is a very well composed photograph, with the stark, winter tree demanding f/g attention, spreading its branches across the expanse of sky. It links nicely with the b/g tree, completing the sense of depth.

I do like winter trees, they have such a beauty and stoic determination to survive.

Mooie sfeerfoto van de uiterwaarden.
Geeft mooi de sfeer van een verdwaald iemand weer.
Lijkt mij wel een passende titel (en dus omslagfoto) voor het boek:
Lost in the Outervalue.

Hello Huub,
Good choice of black and white to accentuate the strong graphical lines offered by the foreground tree. The image is very well composed, creating a great sense of depth. The feeling of desolation is beautifully evoked.

Hello Huub,
I get a feeling that not many colours were lost in this conversion to B&W. The tree in the foreground creates a very beautiful pattern of thin lines against the grey sky. It totally dominates the view of this rather desolate landscape, where the chimney of the brick factory is the only obvious sign of human presence.

Inderdaad erg desolaat zo in zw/w. Ook de hoge schouw in de verte en de lichtjes dreigende lucht dragen bij tot dit gevoel. Beetje akelig, maar dus wel mooi.

Bonjour Huub,

J'aime beaucoup cette construction d'image. Surtout sa transformation en noir et blanc. Elle est d'atmosphère avec ce printemps qui tarde à arriver. L'arbre est magnifique.

Hello Huub, black and white picture with this bare lone tree, there was probably not much colour here anyway, the sky is overcast. Attractive composition of in fact not so specially beautiful landscape. desolate area but even here one can find some beauty.

Hallo Huub,

De stad waar heel wat familie woont van mij, uw zwart wit foto is een ander zicht of we gewoon zijn van Nijmegen.
We bevinden ons bijna in 19445-45 met de woeste gewesten
Maar een goed sfeer beeld van de omgeving van de rivier.
Goed gedaan, bedankt.

Great shot of the lonely tree in B&W medium. The branches are still nicely visible before will be covered by leaves. The photo has good composition with perfect balance between light and shade.

Mooi landschap zo op een grijze dag, de keuze voor zwart-wit maakt maakt de sfeer op de foto nog sterker. Prima compositie dankzij de boom in de rechtervoorgrond.

I like your title: no messing about there! And of course I enjoy the monochrome treatment you've chosen. The composition is pleasing too: on the thirds, and the main subject balanced by the chimney and another tree on the horizon. Also you've succeeded in retaining good definition in the sky. An understated but very satisfying photograph.
