Designer heads bridal wear show

Fashion designer Mart Visser has been chosen as this year's church master, or KerkMeester, by the former church turned museum De Nieuwe Kerk.

The organisers said they chose the designer as they wanted this year's Kerkmeester exhibitions to look to the future rather than the past, as with earlier displays.
One highlight of the show 'an ode to Dutch haute couture' is a design by Visser himself which he created for visual artist Joost Beerents.
Visser made the dress from silk duchesse, which was then finished off by Beerents herself with plaster and starch to create a piece 'like marble.'
Also among the display pieces is The Wave, created by young designer Paula van Dongen and featuring a woven form on the right shoulder.
Meanwhile pearls, shell and coral are among the materials used by jeweller Bibi van der Velden to create a stunning headpiece.
Speaking about his choices, Visser said he had used artists who were known for their fine craftsmanship and who had a distinct 'signature, almost like handwriting.'
De Nieuwe Kerk will be on most people's itinerary when they plan what sights to see from their Amsterdam apartment.
The church is located in the middle of the city centre at Dam Square next to the Royal Palace.
And the bridal wear theme of the new exhibition is appropriate since Queen Beatrix was officially inaugurated at the church in 1980, while more recently The Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima were wed there in 2002.
An ode to Dutch haute coulture runs until October 2.
The museum opens daily from 10am to 5pm, with tickets costing eight euro for adults and entrance free for children under 15.
