The construction site of De Rotterdam. Shot at the Wilhelminapier, the economic center of the Kop van Zuid. The Kop van Zuid is an urban restructuring quarter in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into a integrated living , recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.

De Rotterdam will be an array of three linked highrises and was dsesigned by Rem Koolhaas (OMA-Office of Metropolitan Architecture). Construction was started in 2010. The edifice will have 41 floors and a floorsapce of approximately 160,000 square meters. The height: will be 149 meters. Its presence will dominate the sky line of Kop van Zuid - perhaps too much so (check out the link further down this text).

'De Rotterdam' won't be only about offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, a gym, shops, restaurants and cafe will be created too. The resulting vertical density has inspired the project developers to coin and market it as a 'Vertical city'. A not very inspired name - the Montevideo highrise (Mecanoo/Francien Houben) - the highrise with the M on top in the pic ) was introduced the same way ;-)

The start of the construction was a 1 year late beacause of the economic crisis - the floorspace demand plummeted dramatically on the allready oversaturated office space market. The muncipality stepped in to rescue the project 'cause it was deemed of strategical importance to the Kop van Zuid (and it probably is). The rescue was the decision to rent a considerable amount of the office space - after completion of the building a substantial part of Rotterdam's civil cervants work force will move to 'De Rotterdam'.
