Photographer's Note

The facade of the 'Casa Confetti' (2008, Marlies Rohmer Architects). It's neo-modernist edifice that every graphically inclined photographer should have in his or her portfolio ;-) It’s located in the Utrecht Science Park district (former name: De Uithof).

As a project, the building was known as ‘Smarties’. It is the fourth student residential tower in the district (Urban plan: OMA). It has 377 student residences on its 15 floors. On top is a 600 square meter roof terrace. The building owes its name to the colourful panels that adorn the facade. It's supported by a somewhat ungainly monolithic concrete pedestal.

The architect about the design: "The facade is made up of a grid of multicoloured aluminium panels in which the windows fall away. Seen from a distance, the colours merge into a greyscale skin, and as we approach it, a colourful hive is visible. This reflects the broad spectrum of tenants from all over the world."

Hello Bert,
My portfolio is not what it should be, since I missed this building. But I was happy with my visit to Utrecht a few years ago anyway. ;-) I understand why this façade is irresistible for anyone with a camera. The panels have created a fascinating pattern, and depending on the angles and light several inventive compositions should be possible. I appreciate the straight and neat cropping.

Hallo Bert, this facade is the result of a remarkable artwork, the multicolored aluminium panels create an illusion effect, they draw attention. Some rectangles can be opened, they are used as windows to make the air enter inside the building. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

PS - ik lees m'n privémail niet vaak, dus ik zag gisteren pas dat je een berichtje had gestuurd. We waren één dagje in Tavira, op bezoek vanuit ons hotel in de buurt van Portimão. Ik vond het een heel leuk stadje, zeker wel de aantrekkelijkste plaats die we in onze week in de Algarve bezocht hebben. Wanneer ik klaar ben met m'n Amerikaserie zal ik wat Portugese foto's posten.

Mooi grafisch werk met een gigantische gevel met zoveel verschillende kleuren.

Hi Bert,in fact "confetti" means Smarties in italian language and this lot of colors on the facade of this buildings reminds a lot that. I like the diagonal close up so sharp,and naturally is useful the full view in the WS,well done! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Bert, my neighbour,

The idea of such glass wall is well known but here unique are the colours. They make a fantastic pattern. What a heaven for the photographer. Some open windows look attractive. An interesting note about the idea of this facade. A fine place for the students. I was in Utrecht but it was in 1980, so I couldn't see it. I do not remember much of Utrecht anyway.

Hello Bert,

It was interesting to see the facade as the whole building, in your w/s but this is the artistic version and makes us appreciate the names 'Smarties', 'Confetti' or maybe 'kaleidoscope' would also work!
It's a pity that Beta has been abandoned because your photograph, along with many others, looks even better full size. I used to use Beta to view all photographs!

those who do not enjoy architectural photography just won't understand the beauty of this :) But I surely do.
If I ever make it to this city, I'll have to hunt this one down. cool color blocks with mostly greys, but some reds and greens, and orange. awesome visual
