Photographer's Note

This is the side-wall of the Portuguese synagoge, the biggest synagoge in Amsterdam, on the DaniŽl Meyerplein, very near to the fleamarket and the Jewish museum. The rich Portuguese jews fled for the terror of the Spanish catholic kings, in the beginning of the 17 th century, and found a safe and whealty stay in the rather independent and liberal city Amsterdam. So this is also the richest synagogue, compared with the synagogues of the German and East-european jews, built in the same age.
