Photographer's Note

This ceiling reminds me a game which I played in my childhood. We called it in Polish a “cross and circle” game. Surprisingly, when I translated it into English, it appeared that what we called “cross and circle” is called in English “tic-tac-toe” while the “cross and circle” is called in Polish “A Chinese”.

Tic-tac-toe (also known as noughts and crosses or Xs and Os) is a paper-and-pencil game for two players, X and O, who take turns marking the spaces in a 3×3 grid. The player who succeeds in placing three of their marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row wins the game.

Hi Mariusz,in effect with a bit of fantasy,this ceiling reminds this game,called "tris" in Italy. But tha most important thing is this pic,absolutely fantastic! Byłam, widziałam, też próbowalam tak sforotgrafować, nawet specjalnie położyłam się na plecach, ale jakaś zakonnica powiedziała mi, że jak się krzyżem lezy to głową do ołtarza i twarzą do ziemi. Piękne zdjęcie. Rewelacyjna jakość, geometria idealna, ostrość też.

Hello Mariusz,

In Lancashire, we have always called the game 'noughts and crosses' which I'm sure is the same as the game to which you refer. I can see the resemblance between the game board and this ceiling! You know the clue to success is to get the centre square!!!

I have to say well done for looking upwards and noticing these details. Then, you have captured a most attractive and sharp photograph of these details.

Do you remember how Mike used to lie on his back on the floor, causing people to think he was ill, when he was busy taking photographs of ceilings? His mantra was always ... 'Look up, look up!'

not quite the tic-tac-toe I used to play, but pretty close I guess. you cropped and cut this one perfectly, its about as balanced and symmetrical as you can get it to be. look at the exposure too, man, its spot on! Its as if i'm looking up at the ceiling as i'm standing here myself, awesome. cheers

I have no idea which game you refer to. On the thumbnail I tought I saw several clocks :)
However, the columns and the windows make the picture clear.
An impressive ceiling of the basilica, well presented with good clarity and sharpness.
