Photographer's Note

The Warsaw mermaid is the emblem of Warsaw since the middle of the 14th century. Initially she resembled a monster with dragon-like features and bird's legs and wings. In time, she was transformed into a beautiful woman, as portrayed by Konstanty Heger in this statue that was placed on the Old Town Square in 1855.

In 1945 two out of three citizens were killed and 90% of Warsaw was destroyed to ruins. Since then the city is rebuilt and so is this statue. The Old Town (where this picture was taken) was recreated by looking at old pictures and paintings.
