Photographer's Note

This is from the salines just outside the Portuguese city of Aveiro, by a river very close to the Atlantic coast. Salt has been produced here since at least the 10th century and was a major business up to the 1970's, when production declined sharply. Most of the salines were abandoned, partly due to lower profitability but also because of pollution and damages to the pond walls caused by the ever faster ships in the area. When I visited Aveiro in 1984 salt production was already a dying business. Today only a handful of salines remain.

A workshop photo shows the fruit of the last few salt workers' labour. Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
