Photographer's Note

Ar the southern end of Penedono county, 810 meters elevation, total desolatiom (except for a few oak trees resistent to fire) on these granite slopes where until 1980 there was no record of fires.
The border between the districts of Viseu and Guarda, on the horizon line, 930 meters elevation.

It is difficult to imagine but that line also marks the begin of the high plateau (divided betweem Trancoso and Sernancelhe counties) where grows the best edible chestnut of the world (martainha of DOC Soutos da Lapa).
Those are the roasted chestnuts sold in October and November in the streets of downtown Lisbon, replaced after by varieties of Tras-os-Montes (judia, verdeal), that can be stored longer.
