Photographer's Note

Monte Gordo is a town in the east of Algarve.
Formerly it was a fishing village. After an earthquake in 1755 and subsequent tsunami, it has been completely destroyed. Prime Minister of Portugal decided to build a new settlement, Vila Real de Santo Antnio, on the banks of the River Guadiana to give new homes to the people. But many fishermen from Monte Gordo were opposed and emmigrated instead to Spain.
Only a few fishermen left in Monte Gordo.

Today's population is around 5,000. Since 1960, Monte Gordo has become a tourist destination, among the big hotels there is a district of small historical houses with colorful facades.
