Photographer's Note

Believe or not, this is one of Portugal’s top beaches in the height of the summer season, so it shows you don’t have to go to an island in the middle of the Pacific to have a beach all to yourself (see Crowded Beach - 1).

Why is this picturesque beach so deserted? Well, firstly this was taken at 8.00 am in the morning, and secondly it was taken on the morning after Portugal lost to France in the World Cup semi-final – so maybe the locals didn’t feel like getting out of bed early that day. But I guess the real reason is that neither the locals nor the holidaymakers get up early in this part of the world – despite this being a lovely time of the day. In Portugal people eat late and party late, so there are not too many early risers.

This is Cascais beach on the Estoril Coast. I heard Cascais being pronounced by the locals as both ‘Cass-kyse’ and ‘Cash-kyshe’ – so I am not sure which is correct – but Cascais was well known in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century as the place where Europe’s royalty and aristocracy went for their summer holidays. It has a very agreeable climate – dry most of the year; warm but not overly hot in the summer, and mild in the winter.

Many wealthy people have made their homes in Cascais, because of the amenable climate, but it’s still a great place for us less wealthy mortals to visit due to its relaxing atmosphere and interesting old town (actually more of a village than a town).

The only PP that I did to this was to increase saturation and sharpen. The increased saturation restored the true colour of the beach which was a little washed out in the original. The deep blue sky is due to the polarising filter, not the increased saturation.

Check out a photograph here that Aires dos Santos took from the same POV about a month later - you're in for a surprise!
