Postcard from Fatima, a photo from Santarem, South

Photographer's Note

Whether someone believes in the Apparitions of Fatima or not, it is quite an interesting place to visit. Few months ago, I have watched a movie “Fatima” (2020), which shows the whole story in a very attractive way. I highly recommend it:

Obviously, Portugal has so many beautiful spots with stunning architecture and history that I would not blame anyone for skipping this place, but I wanted to add it to my itinerary, and I don’t regret it. Growing up as a child in a Catholic country this was a place I heard more about than about any other lovely destination in Portugal, which I later had a chance to see. I have actually recorded plenty of photos there, but the best light and quality came out in the photos taken on that evening in this direction.

Od razu rozpoznalem, ze to z archiwum ;)
Swiatlo tutaj gra role glowna.
Ciekawy kosciol z imponujaca wieza.

Witaj Mariusz

It's possibly a real event. WWII and all its murder and mayhem were accurately foretold to the children by Mary. Smart choice of a vertical frame. I don't agree with the commercialisation of the event though. Anyway good lighting & warm cold colour contrasts. Tfs!

Indeed an interesting place, Mariusz.
At the time we were there a ceramony was held and all of a sudden we saw a man on his knees approached from a fair distance to the main hall on the special trail leading to, than got the priest blssings while the crowd was applauding.
Besides, it is an architecture monument as shown here.

Hello Mariusz,

You mention the light in your notes, which doesn't surprise me, for its quality is one of the first noticeable aspects. It appears almost as if a spotlight has been focussed upon the church building.
In the f/g, the figures are all in shadow, as if symbolically walking forward, into the light!

Piekne ujecie ze wzgledu na swiatlo i kontrast. Bardzo podoba mi sie ocieniony pierwszy plan, ktory jeszcze bardziej uwydatnia pieknie oswietlona facade. Kierunek padania swiatla sprawia, ze zdjecie wydaje sie trojwymiarowe.
Ja z tego samego powodu odwiedzilam kiedys Lourdes i bardzo mi sie ta wycieczka podobala.

PS. Tez bym chciala pojechac jeszcze raz do Lwowa. Pogoda byla naprawde paskudna i mam tylko jedno zdjecie jakosci okropnej.

Hi Mariusz,I am happy to know that Fatima is also an interesting place to visit and it is not just a pilgrimage destination where there is nothing to see like Medjugorije. A beautiful photo of this church in this well-known place. The tall elegant tower looks beautiful in this symmetrical composition. Great light as well. It adds a nice warm hue and a good play of light and shadows.

Hello Mariusz,
That evening the foreground was already in the shadow. One would even think in some darkness because of the bright sunlight that beautifully illuminated the cathedral and created a strong contrast.
The white cathedral gets a nice soft colour, which makes it stand out strongly against the blue sky.
I was in Fatima in 1985. In 2015 my bus to another destination had a small stop in Fatima and I noticed that the town had grown enormously.

fatima is located few km far from the village of my ancestors and I ever visited it while in portugal, anyway we did ever fast visits with half day of few hours. nice this classic view of the main church. I visited the 3 of the most important marian sanctuaries in the world yet (Aparecida- Fátima and Lourdes), I only need to know the Mexican one.
