Photographer's Note
In Batalha I have experienced a real jaw-dropping. This place is truly spectacular. And no one of my photos is any good to show how splendid is the Dominican abbey of Santa Maria da Vitoria at Batalha. No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
For me it was interesting to find out that batalha means battle. And indeed batalha is pronounced like batali:a, which in my native (Polish) language is also a synonym for a battle. I wonder: how the word end up even in a Slavic language?
In any case obviously it was a place of a great victory of Joao I (1385) over Castilians which ensured over 200 years of undisturbed Portuguese independence from Spain.
This particular view presents so called unfinished chapels. Here you can see another postcard-type view of the monastery and unfinished chapels.

Bonjour Mariusz.
Cette chapelle inachevée est magnifique. Peut-être qu'en regardant selon ton POV, les architectes à l'époque ont compris que seul le ciel pouvait achever cette chapelle.
Tu en as fait une très belle photo.

mariusz
a classic angle of this marvelous place. I guess you knows about the history of the ceiling of this abbey. portuguese never had done a so large one and they put the spaniards prisoners under it when they removed the wood props, if the ceiling had fell down the prisoners would be killed, if not they would be released. a typical medieval cruelty.
take care
jorge
