Photographer's Note
The Standard of the Decobrimentos was inaugurated in 1960, aquando of the celebrations of the 500 years of the death of Infant D. Enrique (Enrique the Navigator). It evokes the maritime expansion clearly and was drawn in the one form caravela, led for Infant D. Enrique - that insurance in a hand small caravela -, followed of many other heroes of Portuguese history (Vasco of Gamma, Peter Álvares Cabral - that it discovered Brazil - Fernão Magalhães - that it crossed the Pacific in 1520 -, the Camões writer and many others). Visa of gigantic Rosa-dos-Ventos, this monument every year fascinates for its majestosidade and its 50 meters of height, being visited by thousand of people. Minutely sculptured in rock, Rosa-dos-Ventos (it sees the panel in the top of the page) was a gift of the Republic of Africa of the South and percepciona better of the top of a mountain of the Standard of the Discoveries, whose access is made by the situated elevator inside of the building. The central map, with figures of carracks and drawn sereias, shows the routes of the discoveries materialize in centuries XV and XVI. This monument is placed in Belém, exactly in the edge of the river Tejo, in an area only e is particularly impressive to the light of the put-do-sun.

A great photo. The lighting is perfect. The way you positioned the statue in your photo creates strong sense of "what's out there". The light is like a heavanly light of inspiration or guidance. You have captured strong lines leading from the bottom of the image to the monument, as well, emphasizing the explorer. All I can see that would mar this are the grain elevators and structures on the horizon, ruining the open water feel. Very nice, otherwise. Well seen and photographed.
