Photographer's Note

Porto Santo is the name of the district for all the island of Porto Santo, belongoing to the autonomous Madeira Region, with an area of 42,17 km² with nearly 5000 inhabitants.

This is one of the five counties in Portugal with only one district and both with the same name.
This Island was discovered in 1418 by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira.

Although near the seait has a very unproductive sandy clayied soil - very low pluviosity compared with the Madeira main Island.
With fabulous desert beaches the longesthas 9 km long this Island has lots of palm trees reminding a beach in the pacific Ocean.
It's granted for many people that Cristovão Colombo the great navigator lived here after married with the daughter of one of the Portuguese Navigator Bartolomeu Perestrelo.
The district was created in 1835.
