Photographer's Note

There are many stories and legends about the discovery of the Madeira Archipelago.

Its seems certain that the discoverers were sailing in search of Guinea, on the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator, when they were blown off course by a violent storm and ended up on a beach on the island of Porto Santo.

According to the historian Gaspar Frutuoso, Madeira was discovered on 1 July 1419 and João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira came ashore at Machico Bay the next day.

This is considered to be the official version and 1 July is a public holiday in the Madeira Autonomous Region.

nowadays of course....
