Gift of Obelix to Alentejo :-), a photo from Portalegre, South

Photographer's Note

Here you have the Meada menhir, the tallest menhir (menir in Portuguese) of Iberian Peninsula. It is more than 7 meters tall and weights over 18 tonnes.

Menhirs are pre-historic megalithic monuments several thousands years old - I have read somewhere that some archaeological research done near this one puts its construction on the 5 millennium BC (well before the time of our friend Obelix :-).

I am not sure if it is a good idea including (again) my son on the photo, but I have too good reasons to do it: one is scale and another is that the other shots I did that day have the sky over-exposed. And I think that the image gains balance and a touch of life...

I have posted a WS with another shot with pretty much the same POV but without anybody in sight.

I created a theme to group my posts of megalithic monuments. All those monuments shown in that theme are pretty close to each other (less than 10 Km).

Olá José,

Podes crer que o menino está dando muita vida à foto, com o seu bonito sorriso. Além disso ele dá escala para este monumento pré-histórico tão interessante. Excelente nitidez, cores e luminosidade.

Olá José,
uma linda fotografia, em imagens e detalhes. Claro, a presença do garoto serve de comparativo, parâmetro de referência, para o tamanho do monumento MEADA e ainda alegra um pouco a aridez que circunda o mesmo monumento.

Ola José !
Bela foto do monumento. A criança da muita vida ao lugar e nao deixa de criar um salto no tempo desde a longica pre-historia até ao nosso seculo com essa presença humana. A composiçao esta boa e as cores muito naturais, embora as condiçoes meteorologicas nao parecem ser das melhores.

I think you made the right choice to include your son on this as the alternative not only seems a bit bare but the scale is not as easy to determine, although the trees help a bit. I might have cropped the bottom where I think your son's toy parachute(?) is a bit of a distraction. Sometimes with these megaliths it's difficult to make a satisfactory composition because of a lack of other features around. You got over that here. Well done

Olá José,
Vi as duas fotos e, indubitavelmente, esta com o menino está melhor. Não só devido às melhores condições do céu, mas também pela presença humana, que fez um efeito positivo inesperado para mim, tenho que confessar. Realmente, temos a tendência em apreciar a visão de humanos em imagens, principalmente quando são crianças. Boa nota instrutiva.

Interesante monumento megalitico, muy buena foto, la presencia de tu hijo es importante ya que nos da una escala del tamaño del monumento asi como vida a tu foto.
Espero tu llamada cuando llegues a Santo Domingo.

Great idea to include your boy in this Jose. A contrast of the very young and the very old. It is quite a moody sky you've captured which adds to the atmosphere.

Acho que a Ana (adores) ja postou algumas fotos desse local também, parece ser bem interessante, gostei do tempo fechado sobre o monumento, da um aspecto místico a ele! A criança com a pipa ficou muito bom também!

Há muito tempo que não te via por aqui. Estiveste de férias?
Pois sim senhor, acho que o Obelix também teria gostado desta foto e talvez até fizesse uma escala mais apropriada devido ao seu tamanho em largura!
Quanto ao moço, se não o disseres ninguém sabe quem é. Portanto, não te preocupes.
O WS também está e digo mesmo que gosto mais da maneira como mostras o menir. Vê-se melhor as texturas da pedra.

By Toutatis, that's a nice piece of a menhir, although I don't remember Asterix and Obelix having been to Lusitania ;-)
The child is good there to provide scale, this thing must be a bit heavy !

Olá José, de repente lembraste-me o tema da Anabela - só falei com ela antes de ela ir de férias há imenso tempo...Este menir é de facto impressionante e pergunto-me se o visitei com os meus pais quando era míudo. A foto está excelente e o teu filho é uma mais valia, se bem que o WS também está bom, provavelmente com mais detalhe e melhor luminosidade, apesar do céu branco. No geral, concordo que esta está melhor. Bom saber que este é o maior. Já vi no mapa onde fica.

I'm not sure having a scale was usefukl because the mood of the place is strong enough by itself to justify the post. Whatever, it's well composed, well balanced, in an intesting light (especially with the blue tones in the sky).

LOL, Obelix in Lusitania! That would be the right title for another book of this marvelous cartoon. I see that Ideafix is already there giving reference to the size of the menhir. It seems to be already the perfect shot for the family album :-)

the workshop version is a bit brighter but misses life. And this one is more realistic in my eyes. Fine sharpness and very clear shot. Has Obelix brought or thrown this one?

Bela atmosphére, José! O céu e a luz estão muito boas e a o monumento é fantástico! Obelix deixou por lá... igualzinho!

A good capture of this Menhir nicely placed in its environment with the curving path to it towards an excellent cloudy textured sky. Fine to scale it out with that jumping young boy but the view I think could be as well strong enough by cloning him out, a matter of option of course. Perfect coloring ,contrast and shap detailled texture on the rock, well edited Jose.

Olá José,
Parecia-me que já tinha comentado esta. Mas não. Possivelmente porque em miniatura não é muito apelativa. Esta é daquelas que a miniatura engana. Em tamanho normal vê-se muito melhor que está bem composta, tem boas cores e a parte branca do céu no limite de não chatear.
A inclusão do pequeno Pires é fundamental para perceber o tamanho do menir.
