Photographer's Note

ces fenêtres sont les fenêtres de logements, type d'appartements sous Ceausescu, les gens étaient ôtés de leur maison individuelle et étaient placés dans ces sortes de "cages à lapin", sous la surveillance de personnes très attentives à leurs mouvements et leurs paroles;

il n'est pas rare encore, de voir des gens promener leur "vache à la laisse", faute de terrain où les laisser paître.

depuis quelques années les roumains peuvent récupérer leurs biens, terres et maison, s'ils prouvent qu'ils peuvent faire les travaux de rénovation pour les maisons endommagées.

heureusement il existe de nombreux villages qui ont gardé leurs traditions pour notre grande joie.

these windows are the windows of residences, type of apartments under Causescu, people were removed of their house and were placed in these kinds of "rabbit cages", under the monitoring of people very attentive with their movements and their words;

it is not rare still, to see people walking their "cow to leaves", for lack of ground where to let them feed.

for a few years Rumanian has been able to recover their goods, grounds and house, if they prove that they can do the work of restoration for the damaged houses.

fortunately there are many villages which kept their traditions for our great joy.

At first I was shocked when I saw this photo. This buldings looked like some others you can find in Madrid where Pedro Almodovar shooted what is probably his best film "¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?"... How is it possible such a coincidence? Easy to answer: Ceaucescu in Rumania and Franco in Spain were two terribles dictators and no matter one were comunist and the other fascist, both only had one interest: They own. Wonderful light here Francine and perfect framing, look like the world is only this. Take care et merci bien.

Hallucinant! Le fait que votre photo ne cadre que ces logements rend l'effet d'uniformité et de monotonie encore plus impressionnant. Est-ce ma vue qui fait défaut, mais y a-t-il des fils qui passent devant? Malgré tout, j'aime bien cette photo même si elle me donne un peu la chair de poule!

Bonjour Francine,
C'est vraiment dingue... Cette image me fait penser à une photo d'il y a quelques mois sur les logements précaires de Rio. Malheureusement, je ne crois pas que cette politique d'urbanisme soit le seul fait des dictatures. Que dire des exemples de la Cité Radieuse ou des grands travaux des années 60 ? Que dire de la précarité qui existe encore aujourd'hui dans une ville comme Paris (cf. incendie dans le XIIIeme) ?
Merci néanmoins de rappeler l'horreur et l'autoritarisme de l'ère Causescu qui n'est pas si lointaine...

It looks like a very ugly building to leave in but some don’t have a choice
The good thing about is that it’s a beautiful building for the graphical eye
Funny how everybody has a different balcony most yellow but some white or blue and the same with the walls

It's incredible how people can be managed by a dictatorial regime. It's a pity that it still exists in many parts of the world.

Excellent framing. I love these repetitive patterns. The lighting is well balanced as are the colors. The top part of the building with the balcony shades is the most powerful. The wires running through the photo are somewhat distracting but that's a minor point.

Suis épaté (mais atterré par la note) par la qualité graphique de la photo.
Le cadrage plein pot sur ces petits rectangles de couleur sans aucun repère, sans espoir de ciel bleu est géant. Ce que je trouve vraiment bien dans cette compo d'un point de vue uniquement artistique, c'est bizarrement ces câbles électriques qui brisent la monotonie (suis je peux dire)
Sans faire d'interprétation pompeuse : il y a comme un raté dans le système.
c'est une photo docu exemplaire aux qualités graphiques superbes.

Cette photo est incroyable! Je viens de rentrer aussi d'un voyage en Romanie et je n'ai pas pu eviter de voir aussi ces monstres construit par le regime. Et il y a aussi des villes entieres, avec des noms paradoxales comme "Traian", Decebal", etc., evoquant epoques de grandeur a travers le gris, la monotonie et la misere. C'est un cauchemar, que ta photo communique dans une transfiguration touchante...

Hi Francine, although a very ugly building...it still has appeal. I see that some of the residents have tried to make their rabbit cage unique by adding different colour glass balconies. One appartment is even painted white. Anyway, nicely captured with a great perspective and focus.

D'abord, c'est une bele photo dgne d'un pro :-))) mais aussi un sujet interessant ou on voit le dénuement de ces gens et le mode de vie que ce système leur a offert.

C'est drole cette image qui me rappelle mes petites maisons expagnoles. C'est le même graphisme, le meme cadrage serré.
Le contexte est différent certes et moins glorieux pour les conditions de logement en Roumanie.

Une photo très impressionante.
Obliger les gens à vivre confinés de la sorte alors que leur pays ne manque pas d'espace est une manière de leur oter toute dignité, ce qui était d'ailleurs certainement l'un des buts de Ceaucescu.

Tu nous sors là une MAGNIFIQUE compo.
Bon le type de logement en lui-mèeme doit être insalubre....ca doit pas être facile de vivre entassé les uns sur les autres là dedans....mais ta photo est superbe.
Le cadrage est terribelement bon et c'est fou le nombre de détails que l'on trouve dans cette image.
Très graphique comme shot, j'adore

Graphically a fine picture but what a sad compostion, to live in a place like thisand under such circumstances must be soul destroying. My eys have been scanning the balconies to see if I could see a glimmer, a flower pot or so, but helaas no.

Une graphisme un peu macabre je trouve, surtout quand on compare ceci avec les conditions de logement que nous on a à l'ouest. Une photo techniquement très bien élaboré mais qui choque quand-même... Bien fait.

Cette photo est surealiste. Quand je suis passe en roumanie, j'ai pris aussi quelques photos d'habitation un peu delabre du sud est du pays. Cette immeuble me plonge dans la banlieue de Bucharest dans son labyrinthe sans fin de HLM.

Je ne sias pas comment j'ai raté cette photo. Cestune batiment massive, on ne sais pas ou il commence et ou il finnis, cest enorme et deshumanisante, cest domage, j'ai entendu que Bucharest cetait un tres belle ville et maintenant il ne reste presque rien.

Salut Francine. yes, this is a great image of the socialist style blocks. I saw a lot of these in Bucharest as well... although I have never been to Suceava. this is a really good example of the living environment. nice job.

Cropped to emphasise the squashed in effect mention in the useful note. A good composition for others to see the follies of of history. Hoping to see new buildings near here which are hopefully more spacious. It reminds me a bit of some of the older parts of Hong Kong, but there the blocks are very tall and narrow. Thanks for seeing and congratulations for presenting this to TE.

Impressionnant. Je suppose que l'on retrouve plusieurs complexes de ce genre. Au Japon, par exemple, il y a Takashimadaira, un complexe de 100 000 logements de fonction qui ressemble plus ou moins a ca, le patchwork de couleurs en moins. Pas de Ceaucescu pour que les cages a lapins sortent de terre. Lille Sud, que je connais, est du meme acabit et pourtant pas de regime totalitaire en France. Disons qu il ne manque plus que les chiens de garde du pouvoir pour enregistrer les moindres mouvements des gens dans nos contrees developpees.

I am really impressive about this picture, I think it really gets all the significant about this kind of popular architecture form the eastern Europe cities. There are some similar buildings built in Spain under the dictatorship of Franco and its Home Ministry, here is an example.
