Photographer's Note

Romanian women have painted chicken and duck eggs for centuries at Easter time. Each egg is unique and requires lots of time, patience, and talent. Every color has a meaning: red, the sun, fire; yellow, youth and happiness; blue = health, black line = death, etc. The broken shells must never be discarded, but sprinkled carefully in the garden to protect the home from demons.
The first easter eggs were painted red to symbolize the blood of Christ that fell on a basket of eggs that Mary had put at the base of the cross while she prayed for Jesus. The Greeks, to this day, panit their Easter eggs only red. The Americans have added a few more water colors to the palette. But it is the Romanians who have brought egg painting to an art form.
