Photographer's Note
Something old and different today, a few days ago fello member Liliana asked me why I have never been to Romania, actually I went there in 1997 and in 2000, but most of my negatives were damaged if not destroyed in a coffee spill accident (with milk, no sugar). A few, such as this one, survived, but the better ones died. This was taken in Brasov at around sunset, I do not know which church this is, at the time the famous Black Church was totally under scaffolding.
The title was inspired by a song by Black Sabbath, I did not disturb this fellow I hope. Since I cannot identify the church, I will write about the song: Ian Gillan, formerly of Deep Purple (the voice behind "Smoke on the Water"), briefly joined Black Sabbath in 1983, the resulting sound was a unique blend of "Black Purple", I personally liked the songs, though the sound quality and album cover artwork were both atrocious. An excerpt from the lyrics:
The force of the devil is the darkness the priest has to face
The force of the night will destroy him but will not disgrace
To get into his mind and to his soul you gotta set alight
The flames of doubt so deep inside inside
The devil and the priest can't exist if one goes away
It's just like the battle of the sun and the moon and night and day
The force of the devil, that's we're all told to fear
Watch out for religion when he gets too near too near

Hi Tan,
Truly your 'photographed countries' looks like UN listing!
And a good addition here, with a fine scan, having warm colors and light.. framing and sharpness are fine too.. the inclusin of the priest completes the image

Hi Tan. What a great array of colors you've got here. I don't think you bothered the man at all. The image quality is so good I thought you took it with a modern digital camera. tfs Tan.

Hello Tan,
Tu as très bien cadré cette chapelle ! La distorsion est quasiment invisible et les couleurs sont superbe ! Ton cadrage est excellent ! Il y a juste une peu de bruit dans l'image mais cela participe presque à l'ambiance religieuse !
Bien vu !

Those spires indeed remind me of my owd visit to Romania. Beautiful architecture, impressive sloped landscape and human presence adding some friendly atmosphere.

Great luminosity on the church and around. I like very much the priest going down bringing scale and human element. A beautiful construction.

Hi Tan,
and congratulations on adding yet another splash of yellow on an already quite rich map !
Despite the coffee incident (Quit coffee, with beer you won't ever spread milk on your negatives again !) this papagolfade turned out very well, the angle is dynamic and the coming priest is a plus here.
Have a nice day,

Hi Tan - a good view on this church, lots of parallel vertical lines (the chruch spire, turrets, the trees). Two human elements help with the scale here, the priest on the path but also that person in the door of the church itself.
Gillan's time with Sabbath was odd - apparently when they played the Reading Festival in England that year he didn't know any of the lyrics so they printed them out on cue cards & laid them on the stage floor. Of course, the dry-ice covered up the cards! ;)

I really like the atmosphere in this photo. Mostly because of the pleasant colours I think. The church architecture looks very interesting here and you placed it well in the composition together with the trees. Well done!

Hi, Tan. An interesting church that stands well out on the forest and the sky. the statue on the left and the priest create a good depth in the picture. The trees on the right frame the picture very well. A good quality scan.

The church is called "Sfantul Nicolae" (St. Nocholas). The oldest and the most beautiful Romanian Orthodox church in Brasov.
Firsts church on this site is dated back to 1292. The current stone church was built in 1495.
It is not very large, but cleverly placed on top of a small hill so it dominates the soundings.

Hi Tan, my first impression was the surprise of the noise in this picture that as strnage as it might sound - I like the noise. Than readin gyour note regarding your lost Romania picture I ask myself how the good ones might have looked. This one is already pretty dam good. Despite the noise it is sharp, colorful and breathes charm.

Hi Tan,
Perhaps old and different, but this goes straight to my favourites - and that's before even reading your inspiring note...The church appears as out of a storybook, with the monk perfectly positioned in the foreground to enhance. The lighting and surroundings combine with the ornate and beautiful exterior to mesmerize. And there is that air of history about it, of swirling events, and somehow of darkness and light. First rate.

Wonderful colour, sharpness, & lighting, & a very good choice of a vertical frame & format. I like the graphism of the towers against the sky, & the lone priest, who adds scale & context. Tfs!

Hi Tan,
It's hard to imagine that this one belongued to the lot of less good ones, as it's wonderful with its warm tones and the priest. It's amazing the auntity of towers, even the tree close to the priest looks like one.
Thank you both for the photo and the reminding of Black Sabath and the colaboration of Ian Gillan with them. I hadn't heard from them for ages and I confess I don't listen to their music since a long time also, although they were one of my favourites in my youth. Ah, those guitars that seemed to cry like that unique voice of Ozzy Osborne... :D
Strangely (and maybe not), I think your photo combines very well with their music.
TFS, Regards, José.

Hi Tan!
This is a very interesting shot and a great note. I did not see, first, the link between your title and the song by Black Sabbath, and I also didn't know about the short collaboration between Ian Gillian and BS. Very interesting to learn that in front of this very nice church. The lyrics of the song are quite well fitting with this country, with its well known legends showing the fight of religion against evil (vampires, etc...).
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Tan,
Beautiful shot. In my trip to Romania (one month ago) I took too a photo of this church, with snow. I'm not sure if I'll post it yet, but your shot makes me remember a very nice trip. It's a beautiful orthodox church devoted to St. Nicholas. And your compo is great, wiht the priest in the way, nice addition! Thanks, have a nice weekend.

I like the oldies tones, makes it funny and nostalgic in a certain way. There is a kind of noise that fits well to the mood. And the compo is OK with the priest providing scale and life.
Well done.
