Photographer's Note
On the way to my first breakfast on Lanzarote I heard some loud birds flying over the hotel pool. They appeared to be little green parrots. Later that same day I spotted a group of them on a tree in the main town of Lanzarote, Arrecife. Tourists tried to photograph them with their phones. I don’t think I have seen wild parrots before. I have later identified them as monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus). They were eating fruit from the tree which I was not able to name neither. The main photo shows one of them enjoying the fruit, while in the workshop I will add a more portrait-like photo of the parrot.
Just a second after that encounter I noticed another bird, which I have seen for the first time in my life: a hoopoe (Upupa epops). It can be seen also in Poland, but it is quite rare so that I have never seen it before. Unfortunately, it flew away before I managed to take my camera out.
I am not sure whether you are aware of this but according to Wikipedia the name “Islas Canarias” is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs", a name that was evidently generalized from the ancient name of one of these islands, Canaria – presumably Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the island Canaria contained "vast multitudes of dogs of very large size". The name of the islands is NOT derived from the canary bird; rather, the birds are named after the islands.

Hello Mariusz,
Yes, I knew the story of the origin of the name 'Canary Islands'. But I didn't know that the birds were named after the archipelago. I thought they came from more tropical countries.
I've also heard that the breed of dog that the Spaniards found there is already extinct.
Nice funny title for this photo. I used to dream sometimes that one day I would send Christmas wishes from Easter Island :)
Also the photo in the WS is beautiful.
Are they all the same kind of parrots that live there?
Best regards, Paul

Hi Mariusz, two beautiful photos, I prefer the one in the WS, of this colorful budgie, a great opportunity offered by the Canaries. The main photo, however, is of exceptional quality considering the light and the location. Even in my village there are many budgies, surely escaped from the cages and now they have settled in and resist even the cold winter. And even the hoopoes in recent years have returned to populate the fields. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Mariusz,
Its bright red beak gave the parrot away, otherwise it would have been easy to miss it among the equally bright green leaves. Good and sharp photo against a nice and blurry backdrop.

Hi Mariusz
You were lucky this green parrot was preoccupied with eating otherwise it might have flown away quickly like the other bird. Excellent use of differential focus with good sharpness. Tfs!

I guess this is the same bird I saw in london and barcelona, not wild from europe. I guess it came from india. I checked the images with the science name you put in the text and the image is different of this one.

Hello friend Mariusz.
Two splendid compositions with the photos of this parrot, I did not see any in my room, they are two very well captured photos and the leaves and branches of the tree adorn the images a lot.
A great photos, with beautiful natural colors, lighting and sharpness.
Well done. Love it.
Happy start of the week.
Very best regards.
Luis.
