Photographer's Note
Unique and magnificent, the Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the most magnificent works that the Romans left scattered throughout their vast empire. It was built to lead the water from the Sierra to Segovia, it is the heraldic symbol of the city and its construction was attributed to the devil by legend.
The hypotheses point to the second century AD, after the year 112 AD. (end of the government of Trajano or already in the one of Adriano). The impossibility of exact dating does not prevent it from heading the ranking of the best civil engineering works in Spain. Its 167 granite stone arches from the Guadarrama are made up of ashlars joined without any type of mortar by means of an ingenious balance of forces. Extraordinary work, in which utility coexists with harmony and beauty, has served the city until recently. Through the centuries, it has hardly undergone any modifications.
Only during the attack against Segovia led in 1072 by the Muslim Al-Mamún de Toledo, 36 bows suffered damage; the damage was restored in the 15th century by Fray Juan de Escobedo, a monk from Parral. Since ancient times, there have been two niches that probably protected pagan gods, replaced in the time of the Catholic Monarchs by the images of San Sebastián and the Virgin. Under the niches there was a legend in bronze letters, relating to the foundation of the bridge, of which today only the trace of the inscription remains.
El Azoguejo: In the Plaza del Azoguejo the Aqueduct has its maximum height and the arches, along a series of 43, are arranged in two orders. The two niches can be seen, one of them occupied by an image of the Virgin and the traces of the inscriptions with bronze letters on the cartouches, the reading of which has not been fully deciphered.

Hola Luis,
beautiful wide view of the ancient aqueduct. It seems so well preserved. You captured it well in the context of the town and with a colorful couple walking into the scene.
Fantastic sky adds a very dynamic touch here.
Excellent work,

Hello Luis,
For fairly obvious reasons this magnificent aqueduct remains my strongest memory of the one day I spent in Segovia more than 37 years ago. In fact, it's almost my only memory of the city, but I think some of the immediate surroundings have changed since then. From this fairly long distance we get an excellent wide view of the masterpiece of Roman architecture, showing us its place in the modern city. The young couple provide a perfect foreground, not least because the lady is dressed in red . The photo has a superb clarity and very good colours.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hola Luis,
I find this remarkable, both for the building and for the clarity of your photograph!
Who would believe that something so magnificent, built without mortar, would still be standing and serving its purpose after nearly 2,000 years!
I like how you have created a fine, linear perspective and positioned the couple so very strongly within the frame.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Luis,
I remember seeing a picture of this aqueduct in my childhood. Without thinking about the possibility of travelling abroad at the time, that image appealed to me enormously.
Many years later I went to Spain for the first time and also visited Segovia and was very impressed by this fantastic monument.
More years later I visited a friend in Spain and together we went to Segovia where I enjoyed the old Roman aqueduct for the second time.
This is the place where the aqueduct has its maximum height, you write. We can see that clearly comparing with the height of the houses.
On my second visit I had a hotel nearby and it was possible to see a part of the aqueduct through the room window.
Superb presentation! It looks very impressive in this photo.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Luis,
The closest to this I have seen with mine eyes is the aqueduct in Istanbul, but that a 6-lane avenue passes through it. I like this better with the pedestrian walkways.

Hi Luis,
Magnificent view of this ancient aqueduct. People far under it look very small. More modern details are in fairly good balance with the main subject.

Hi Luis
Street scene and aqueduct, interesting how they interact - the latter acts as an effective eye stopper whereas the couple hooks the eye and leads into the whole pic....
Excellent

luis

Hello Luis, I haven’t seen the aqueduct from this point of view before, what a fabulous construction.
We can fully appreciate the very fine structure, how amazing that it has lasted for so many years.
We have visited Pont du Gard in southern France, which was impressive but this is even more so.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.
