Photographer's Note

Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Holy Cathedral Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and of San Frutos, is part of the late Gothic. It is one of the later Gothic cathedrals in Spain and Europe. It was built in the 16th century, specifically between the years 1525 and 1768.

At this time the prevailing architecture in Europe was already the Renaissance. That is why in the Cathedral of Segovia we can discern a predominantly Gothic style, being late Gothic, but already framed with some Renaissance features.

Its beauty and elegance, as well as its visual strength and dimensions, make possible its name as La Dama de las Catedrales, coined by the President of the First Spanish Republic, Emilio Castelar. Located in the Plaza Mayor of Segovia, halfway we can find two monuments of great historical and architectural value for the city: the Roman Aqueduct and the Alcázar. It should also be noted that Segovia is one of the Spanish cities with the most churches.

Each of the different stones that make up the Holy Cathedral Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and of San Frutos reveals centuries and centuries of great history. The same story that reigns throughout the city, chosen in 1985, a World Heritage Site.

This photograph is taken from the church of San Millan in the lower part of the city.

Construida entre los siglos XVI y XVIII, la Santa Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y de San Frutos, forma parte del gótico tardío. Es una de las catedrales góticas más tardías de España y Europa. Se erige en pleno siglo XVI, concretamente entre los años 1525 y 1768.

En esta época la arquitectura imperante en Europa era ya la renacentista. Es por ello que en la Catedral de Segovia podemos discernir un estilo predominantemente gótico, al ser del gótico tardío, pero ya enmarcado con algunos rasgos renacentistas.

Su belleza y elegancia, así como su fuerza visual y dimensiones, hacen posible su denominación como La Dama de las Catedrales, acuñada por el Presidente de la Primera República Española, Emilio Castelar. Situada en la Plaza Mayor de Segovia, a medio camino podemos encontrar dos monumentos de gran valor histórico y arquitectónico para la ciudad: el Acueducto romano y el Alcázar. Cabe también reseñar que Segovia es una de las ciudades españolas que más iglesias posee.

Cada una de las diferentes piedras que componen la Santa Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y de San Frutos nos revela siglos y siglos de grandiosa historia. La misma historia que impera en toda la ciudad, elegida en 1985, Patrimonio de la humanidad.

Esta fotografia se capta desde la iglesia de San Millan en la parte baja de la ciudad.

Hello Luis,
It's a good photo of the impressive church, but I like how you found so much more to get into the composition. Especially I like the design of the brick roof in the foreground and the good use of the nearest building and the branch of a tree to frame the view of the church. And once again the fine light and colours enhance the photo greatly.

Hola Luis,
Spectacular composition. I like very much the piece of architecture in the foreground and the cathedral in the distance. The space seems to be filled with beautiful structures all made from the same stone color.
Nice touch with the tree branch as well.
Fantastic point of view, very well used!

I know the car gives a lot of flexibility but sometimes also more stress about narrow roads or getting lost, or having a place to park the car.

Hello Luis,
You're very good in making excellent compositions and finding new and original points of view.
Including the leaves in the upper right corner is what most of us would think of. But the part of the beautiful building on the left and the picturesque roofs make the photo of the cathedral absolutely a lot more interesting.

On our visit to Segovia, we learnt that this was the latest Gothic-style built Cathedral in Europe, Luis.

Hola Luis,

You found an excellent, elevated viewpoint from which to photograph the cathedral, allowing you to include some very useful f/g features, full of textures and warm colours, to create a wonderful sense of depth to your photograph.
The cathedral is a most imposing building, with Gothic towers clearly defining the style and standing imperious against the blue sky.

Hi Luis,

A well exposed and sharp photo showing the beautiful architecture of this cathedral. Good composition with the round tower in the left foreground. The cathedral has strong Gothic elements like the flying buttresses, but the domes look more Renaissance.
