Photographer's Note

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, formerly known as the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc or Barcelona Olympic Stadium, is a stadium in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Originally built in 1927 for the 1929 International Exposition in the city (and Barcelona's bid for the 1936 Summer Olympics, which were awarded to Berlin), it was renovated in 1989 to be the main stadium for the 1992 Summer Olympics.The stadium has a capacity of 55,926 (67,007 during the 1992 Olympics), and is located in the Anella Olímpica, in Montjuïc, a large hill to the southwest of the city which overlooks the harbour.
In 2001 the stadium was renamed after the former president of the Generalitat de Catalunya Lluís Companys i Jover, who was executed at the nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940 by the Franco regime.
The stadium, designed by architect Pere Domènech i Roura for the 1929 Expo, was meant to host the People's Olympiad in 1936, a protest event against the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but the event had to be cancelled due the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
In the fifties, the stadium was the centerpiece of the 1955 Mediterranean Games, and in 1957 it hosted the only national football cup final between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol, the two local clubs.
In the seventies the stadium was disused, and the stands deteriorated. When the Spanish Grand Prix and other races were held at the Montjuïc racing circuit, the stadium was used as a paddock for the teams. Due to safety concerns, the 1975 F1 race was nearly boycotted by drivers.
Due to the award of the 1992 Summer Olympics to Barcelona, the stadium was renovated with the involvement of Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti. The stadium was gutted, preserving only the original facades, and new grandstands were built. In 1989 the venue was reinaugurated for the World Cup in Athletics, and three years later it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics competitions of the Olympic Games.
The stadium served as the home of football club RCD Espanyol from 1997 until 2009. The Estadi Olímpic made its final La Liga appearance during the 2008-2009 season, as Espanyol moved to the newly constructed Estadi Cornellà-El Prat.
It also served as the home of the Barcelona Dragons American Football team until 2003. Because the size of the playing surface was slightly shorter than the regulation American Football length, the stadium only had 7-yard end zones, three yards shorter than regulation NFL size in 1991 and 1992. They were later lengthen to the standard 10 yards.
The stadium also played host to the NFL's American Bowl in 1993 and in 1994. The San Francisco 49ers played the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 1, 1993. The second game was played on July 31, 1994 between the Los Angeles Raiders and the Denver Broncos.
The stadium has since 1990 hosted the Míting Internacional d´Atletisme Ciutat de Barcelona an annual track and field meeting.
In 2010, the stadium hosted the 20th European Athletics Championships.

OLIMPIADI

Lo Stadio olimpico Lluís Companys è per grandezza il secondo impianto sportivo di Barcellona, dopo lo stadio Camp Nou del Barcellona. Situato sulla collina del Montjuïc, viene spesso chiamato semplicemente stadio de Montjuïc ed è stato fino al luglio del 2009 l'impianto del Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona, conosciuto anche semplicemente come Espanyol, la seconda squadra del capoluogo catalano.
La sua costruzione risale al lontano 1929 e deve il progetto alla candidatura dell'anno precedente di Barcellona come città ospite dei Giochi della IX Olimpiade. La manifestazione fu però poi assegnata alla città di Amsterdam e lo stadio dovette attendere oltre settanta anni per poter ospitare un'Olimpiade. Lo stadio venne comunque inaugurato il 20 maggio del 1929 in occasione dell'Esposizione Universale di Barcellona.
Tutto l'impianto ha uno stile molto caratteristico, con facciate esterne dall'impronta urbana e dettagli decorativi che richiamano quasi lo stile rinascimentale francese: archi a tutto sesto, colonne con volute, logge, porticati, ordini di finestre e addirittura statue di cavalli rampanti all'inizio degli spalti. Originariamente lo stadio poteva contenere 20.000 spettatori tutti a sedere, disposti attorno alla pista d'atletica su un solo ordine di gradinate continuo ma spigoloso agli angoli, a formare quasi le linee di un rettangolo dai lati arcuati.
Tra il 1989 e il 1992 lo stadio venne ristrutturato per poter finalmente accogliere le Olimpiadi del 1992 e la capienza dell'impianto venne aumentata a 56.000 posti a sedere, mantenendo però inalterato lo stile e la struttura. Il concorso per l'ampliamento dello stadio venne vinto ex aequo dallo studio Gregotti Associati International e dal gruppo di architetti formato da Correa, Milà, Margarit e Buixadè, i quali riuscirono con un progetto ben studiato a rispettare l'impronta originaria dello stadio pur apportando modifiche importanti. Il disegno di rinnovamento previde l'abbassamento del campo da gioco di 12 metri e la realizzazione di un nuovo anello di gradinate situato sotto all'altro e diverso per forma e inclinazione: perfettamente ellittico e a sezione parabolica. I due anelli di gradinate che vediamo ancora oggi sono completamente indipendenti l'uno dall'altro, risultando quello originario come sovrapposto a quello nuovo.
Lo stadio mantiene così un profilo piacevole e unitario pur lasciando facilmente distinguere la struttura originaria degli anni Venti. Accorgimenti degni di nota sono stati presi anche all'interno delle strutture, con la realizzazione di fori circolari nelle mura di sostegno sia per far passare la luce sia per creare ancor di più un senso di apertura tra le vecchie e le nuove costruzioni. L'unicà novità dovuta al restauro che si può ammirare dall'esterno è la grande copertura metallica composta da travi longitudinali bianche lunghe 65 merti che si erge sospesa sulla tribuna principale.L'Espanyol ha giocato le sue partite casalinghe in questo stadio a partire dal 1997, anno in cui è stato demolito lo storico Sarrià (Italia - Brasile 3-2, Spagna 1982) dopo avervi giocato per 74 anni e averci disputato anche la partita inaugurale del 1923.
Dal 2009 l'Espanyol ha abbandonato l'impianto per trasferirsi nel più moderno Estadi Cornellà-El Prat.
Qui sono state giocate anche la partite più importanti della Nazionale di calcio di Andorra. Nel 2002 lo stadio ha ospitato la finale della Coppa del mondo di rugby femminile tra Nuova Zelanda e Inghilterra, nel luglio 2010 vi si sono svolti i 20° Campionati europei di atletica leggera e il 9 aprile 2011 ha ospitato il quarto di finale di Heineken Cup Perpignan-Tolone.
Il 28 ottobre del 2000 l'Espanyol ha celebrato il suo centenario in questo impianto.
L'anno successivo lo stadio è stato intitolato alla memoria di Lluís Companys, leader politico esponente del Partito Esquerra, ministro e Presidente del governo autonomo catalano. Nonostante il nome di grande prestigio per il popolo catalano, per molti questo è sempre rimasto lo stadio Olimpico de Montjuïc, in ricordo della sua nascita legata alle Olimpiadi.

I've noticed before the vast array of fine buildings around the world that have been left as legacies of these world expositions, and here is another fine example. A great example too displayed with such an unusual scene as to have two black cats so positioned against the vivid blue matting. Nice shot that brought a smile to my face today :)

That's a funny well-timed and well-seen moment! Beautiful graphic image with all those straight and diagonal lines, shapes and numbers - brings thoughts of geometry and mathematics at the same time to me.:) Very pleasing soft color scheme, as well. This is the sort of photograph which wins photograpy competitions! Wonderfully simple and strong "graphic" composition, "minimalist" structure and a simple and understated colour palette.

The simple image itself would have been stunning enough but the serendipitous inclusion of the two cats, perfectly placed in the frame, really sets the picture off wonderfully.

They say black cats bring bad luck, and indeed some sportswomen had quite a bad luck at this year olympics.
I suppose some countries see the olympics as an industry, they have a need to show off even if it means forcing children to take illegal drugs. It is not sport anymore but politics.
