Photographer's Note

Dear moderators, please don't remove this photo.

Yesterday Malgo called me and told me our friend Kasia Nowak had passed away. It made me very sad, but I wasn't really surprised. I had received many reports during the last six months of her painful struggle with an inoperable cancer. Just over a week ago I had received a short but worrying message, followed by silence, which had made me fear for the worst.

In March 2017 Kasia passed through Stockholm on her way to the Arctic north of Sweden to watch the Aurora Borealis, "Northern lights". She brought me one of the finest gifts I had ever received: the book seen in this photo.

In the 'KKH Diary' she told the story of her rather adventurous journey through northern Pakistan and into the Chinese province of Xinjiang along the Karakoram Highway, one of the highest paved roads in the world.

The book is full of wonderful photos from the journey, and it only exists in this copy.

Of course I was overwhelmed by such generosity by a person I had only met once before, in London 19 months earlier. But we had already been in touch through comments on TE and many private mails, and we stayed in touch until the very end, discussing not only travels but politics and society in general.

When Kasia arrived in London about 30 years ago she had a dream of becoming a journalist. Instead she chose to study economics in order to find a steady job that would increase her chances of receiving a permanent permit to stay in Britain. Eventually she also became a British citizen.

But she would have been a good journalist, proven by this book and by the many long and interesting and often humorous notes she wrote for her TE photos.

Now the KKH Diary has a proper place in my bookshelf between the works by V.S. Naipaul and Joyce Carol Oates.

In the WS is Kasia in happier days.

Rest in peace, dear Kasia.
