The Red Rathaus, a photo from Basel Stadt, West

Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

My photograph shows the Town Hall, Rathaus in German, in the centre of Basel.

The Town Hall is one of Basel's most iconic buildings. As well as being a major tourist attraction in Basel, it continues to have an influential role on life in the city.

Around 1503 this new Town Hall was begun. The red coloured, lavishly decorated facade we see today represents several stages of building that took place over centuries.

Initial construction took place between 1504 and 1514 according to designs by the architect Ruman Faesch. The three arched entrances are from this era. Extensions were added over the next seven years, which included an Assembly Hall.

In 1521, the artist Hans Holbein the Younger was commissioned to decorate the Assembly Hall (fifteen years later he was making his mark in England as King's painter at the Court of Henry VIII).

It really is a magnificent building which we ventured to see at night time. A photograph can be seen as a workshop.

Lep pogled, interesantan i dobar tekst ...
Lepa stara arhitektura i detalji na fasadi, dobro pokazano sa lepim bojama, kontrastom i uhvacenim trenutkom sa prolaznicima.

Hello Bev,
I have forgotten which British comedian who joked about a German "Rathaus" full of rats. Hopefully there are no such problems here. It is an impressive building with a number of fine wall paintings, including a large one on the tower, and many other elegant details. And as usual a few persons in a photo like this, even looking small, are always better than none at all.

You chose for a vertical frame, but a wonderful image.
I like the nice architectural frontage with different details.
Of course the tower makes your picture extraordinarily pleasant to look at.
Also your night shot is beautiful

The presence of the persons has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of the Town Hall building of Basel. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

A beautiful,exterior of this Basel Rathouse, though I have a picture within the main entrance, the interior is no less beautiful.
Red bricks with extraordinary decorative elements, golden clock and big tower that has an imposing presence.

Redder than any brick house, the imposing building quickly catches the eye.
The city hall has many decorations on the wall and the tower and I especially like the patterns on the roof.

This was my favourite building in Basel but somehow I never has a favourable light there. I see you had challenging conditions as well, but the outcome is able to convince us about the beauty of the structure and we see it also by night.

Hello Bev,
Wow! you've almost an identical shot of 'Day & Night'.
Even the street was 'fairly' quiet.
It's a big change of scenery , from the countryside to the big city.
This is indeed a magnificent building , still standing and looking at its best.
The only place I saw in Basel ... was the 'train station' on my way to France. I regretted for not stopping by :-(
As usual, the POV is excellent. You give us the full-view of this Red Rathaus. I do like the roof a lot.

p/s: yeah, I heard about it but I did not know it's about 4cms a year ... boy! I would prefer to know ... 400cms a hundred years! ... a year sounded too short :-)

at every time I read the word (rathauss) my imagination read (House of rats) and a city hall is ever filled with some human rats. hahaha.
beautiful sample of architecture. I liked these adornments and the paintings in the walls.

I immediately recognised the iconic red town hall in Basel with its large tower and many fine details and ornaments on the façade. Even in the shadows everything looks great. You chose a good angle also.

Hi Bev,
Town Hall of Basel is quite easy to recognize. If I remember right, it is not easy to find a good camera angle because the square is rather small. Vertical framing works well. But afternoon sunshine would be better for this place.
