Photographer's Note

My first scanned photo succesfully uploaded here! I am overjoyed. I've been to so many places with a Nikon SLR, the pictures from which I thought I'd never be able to use in TE.

The title is meant to be humourous. I love animals, even if I eat them. Here a pretty little angora looking sheep, although that is not the breed and I do not know what breed it is (I tried looking up), is munching happily in the one place she should be safe from humans - live ones. The graveyards in Ukrainian small towns and villages all look very similar, especially the use of this sky blue paint. I wonder if this isn't a throwback to older times, as in the Mediterranean regions, where blue protects from evil.

Sokoliwka is the Carpathian village both of my parents grew up in, although each was born somewhere else. This is the one and only place I've ever encountered my surname - in the hundreds. It's a pretty little place, colourful and growing crops I wouldn't have expected in this part of the Ukraine, such as grapes for wine. The barn fowl is picturesque, especially the roosters, which start crowing way before it gets light. The mountains are not so high here, but a few villages down they grow to the size of the Adirondacks. Here they are more like the American Poconos. All is green and lovely, but very superstitious and old fashioned. A nice place to visit, but forgive me, I wouldn't....
