Photographer's Note
Hello Friends,
Please click here, to see the larger, clearer Beta version.
This is the keep of Warkworth Castle; it is cross-shaped and crowns a hilltop, rising steeply above the River Coquet, and dominates one of the largest, strongest and most impressive fortresses in Northumberland.
The castle's most famous owners were the Percy family, whose lion badge can be seen carved on many parts of their stronghold. Wielding almost kingly power in the north, their influence reached its climax under the first Earl of Northumberland and his son 'Harry Hotspur', hero of many Border ballads as the bane of Scots raiders and a dominant character in Shakespeare's 'Henry IV'.
Having helped to depose Richard II, these turbulent 'kingmakers' both fell victim to Henry IV: the next three Percy Earls likewise died violent deaths.
Still roofed and almost complete, the uniquely-planned keep dates mainly from the end of the 14th century.
It presides over the extensive remains of a great hall, chapel, fine gatehouse and a virtually intact circuit of towered walls.
We were lucky enough to witness a Medieval Festival, whilst we were there and were able to watch archery practices, infantry practices, shoe making, candle making and a whole host of relevant artisan skills.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

Howdy Bev,
Fine golden light view of Warkworth Castle, with dominate immense octagon keep, and exterior walls as high as the keep, a formidable architecture. Would enjoy visiting in person to soak in the history and culture.
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers,

Good evening Beverly,
A magnificent POV over the castle, parts still as ruins, but an overwhall sight that is most interesting, photography-wise and historically.
Side light gave a nice shadows cast on the walls.
Have a nice weekend,

Hello Bev,
This is no doubt a magnificent castle (one of so many still remaining in Britain), but I have always wondered what living in a place like this hundreds of years ago was really like. I imagine it was dark, cold, smoky and uncomfortable, although the lower classes lived in conditions which we would not even like to imagine today. Anyway this is well captured in a straightforward shot with immaculate sharpness and colours. I am sure your visit was fascinating.
Kind regards,
Gert

Good evening Beverly,
Good sharpness with effective tight framing and excellent warm cold colour contrasts between the blue sky and yellow red brown color of the stone castle. The flag is a nice extra and the stripe of green in the fg augments the colour palette. Tfs.

Bonjour Beverly,
Quel beau château. Le point de vue est parfait pour nous le présenter dans son ensemble. La contre plongée lui donne toute une ampleur et la lumière est divine pour faire ressortir tous les détails et les textures.
Bon samedi

Hello Bev,
a magnificent castle, it must have been an attractive sight and point of reference throughout its long existence. Henry IV is one of my favourite plays by W. Shakespeare, so I remember the heroes. I like very much the details and colours in your photo, the close and upward viewpoint and the 3D effect, the role of the shadows is essential. This sky makes a glorious backdrop to the subject. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hola Bev
Super POV that lets admire the castle, where I like to see the sky through the now empty windows, as well as the still weaving flag on top
Good soft lateral light
Must be great to assist at the Festival
Well done, regards

Hi Bev
great composition and a very agreable soft light. The clouds contributing to the whole scene. It's a fine capture of a rather impressing place. Great note, too!!
Calls MacBeth to mind. Did you ever see the version made by Roman Polanski?
Cheers Bev
Have a great Sunday
