Photographer's Note
The shortest day of the year at 7h 55m 40s in length (also my birthday!) dawned beautifully with a partial cover of Altocumulus cloud, this allowed the sun to catch it perfectly and produce a stunning orange glow, infact befoe i took this shot the cloud was much better colour with the underside catching the light even more! I will post that photo in the coming days.
To capture the shortest day of the year with such colour is quite unique for me because i have only once ever seen a good sunrise on this day.
Whitecliff bay (where this was taken) isn't anything special for photography, its usually a flat beach with a few stones and some sand, this day however had some amazing rock pools and large seaweed covered rocks. I also found these strange posts that protect the cliff from erosion, they have been there since i was a child but this was the first time i have really noticed them.
I used an ND8 Graduated filter

This is a superb image in all respects, Jamie - both from a technical and compositional perspective (good use of the ND filter). Is it HDR rendered? I like how the swirling motion of the waves, captured through your long exposure, is sort of reflected in the cloudscape. The warm colours and contrast are fabulous too. I have added this to my favourites. I am so glad I spotted this on the TE front page gallery as it has introduced me to your wonderful gallery which I have just been browsing. You have posted some exceptionally good images to TE. Cheers . . . David

Hello Jamie,
You took a fantastic photo there.
Beautifull colours, I think the foreground of the wooden post give great enchantment to the shot, so much details in these old posts.
Caught the sun just right,
Thanks for sharing this one.
Rob.
