Photographer's Note

Some goats at the Monastery atop the small plateau reached by 850 stairs from the valley below. The ancient city of Petra was built by the Nabataeans who called it Raqmu. It dates from between the 4th to 2nd centuries BC. Petra fell to the Romans in 106 AD. Later it was hit by an earthquake in 363 and in the 6th century a few Byzantine temples were added. The city was abandoned after the early Islamic period and remained lost until 1812 AD when Johann Ludwig Burckhardt from Switzerland stumbled across the forgotten ruins. More info here:
