Photographer's Note
Wadi Rum, the desert travelling to Agaba.
This desert has so much authentic biblical history, however, that it makes Hollywood look decidedly amateur. It's just one giant sandy history museum. Nearly every valley, mountainside and watering hole has a relic of the past: Thamudic, Safaitic, Nabataean, Greek and Arabic graffiti litter the cliff faces, a rich repertoire of rock art replete with hunting scenes adorns cave walls, there are rudimentary stone age shelters scattered throughout the gorges.
The desert itself is not so much the sweeping, camel-infested sand dunes of popular imagination, but a sandy, shrubby floor periodically interrupted by weird and wonderful sandstone formations. These jebels (mountains) rear up into the sky with such intimidating and natural force that many a visitor has had a desert epiphany out here.
