Photographer's Note

The great basilica of St. Simeon, was begun in 476 and completed in 490. Your plant is a happy combination of octagon, 28 feet in diameter, and a Greek cross. In the center of the octagon is the last column of air saint.

With its 3840 meters covered square, the basilica could hold 10,000 people. It was the largest and richest church of the Christian East, comparable only to Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The Byzantine historian Evagrius describes it as "a sanctuary surpassing all in splendor and beauty."

Next to the monumental basilica built a monastery, an inn and two baptistries. All in stone well escuadrada.Vista the greatness of the buildings, the delicacy of its design and execution, one wonders: How could a humble monk was able to justify the erection of such building complex? We could not explain without taking into account the popularity of the movement in Syria Stylite. The Basilica of San Simeon explains, better than the literary documents, the worship of the Syrian people for their Stylites.

La gran basilica de San Simeon, fue comenzada en el año 476 y terminada en el 490. Su planta es una feliz combinación de octógono, de 28 metros de diámetro, y de cruz griega. En el centro del octógono se encuentra la última columna del santo aéreo.

Con sus 3.840 metros cuadrados de superficie cubierta, la basílica podía contener 10.000 personas. Era la más vasta y rica iglesia del Oriente cristiano, sólo comparable con Santa Sofía de Constantinopla. El historiador bizantino Evagrio la describe como "un santuario que sobrepasa a todos en esplendor y en belleza".

Junto a la basílica se construyeron un monumental monasterio, una hospedería y dos bautisterios. Todo en piedra bien escuadrada.Vista la grandeza de los edificios, la delicadeza de su traza y ejecución, uno se pregunta: ¿Cómo es posible que un humilde monje haya podido justificar la erección de semejante complejo arquitectónico? No podríamos explicarlo sin tener en cuenta la popularidad del movimiento estilita en Siria. La basílica de San Simeón explica, mejor que los documentos literarios, la veneración del pueblo sirio por sus estilitas.

Hola Luis,
It happens more that your photos show less visited places that I also have visited once. In this case I was there in the summer of 1987.
The ruins still show clearly the huge area of the basilica. The blue sky as background is very nice, specially in the view through the arches.

¡otro buen recuerdo de tu impresionante actividad viajera!
En esta vieja foto captaste las ruinas de lo que fue la maravillosa arquitectura de una gran basílica, que por lo que leemos en tu nota, se podía comparar con Santa Sofía. Desde luego, al ver las personas debajo del pórtico, nos damos cuenta de las dimensiones que tenía.
Una luz fantástica y unos bellos colores en esta foto que aún retiene gran parte de su calidad, a pesar de su "edad".
Bonito trabajo.

Vrlo interesantan i dobar teskt o staroj arhitekturi ...
Lep pogled na stubove i lukove stare arhitekture, lepa fotografija.
Dobra ostrina snimka, kontrast i prikaz lepim bojama.

Un très beau rendu de ces vestiges architecturaux avec des teintes de la pierre s'accordant bien avec ce bleu ciel.Il semble que l'image tilte un peu vers la gauche.

me gusta esta imagen de san simeon...
estuve aqui tam bien ante 3 anos aproximativamente...
estas ruinas son muy particulares...como la historia de el santo que estaba encima la colonna...

Good Morning Luis,

With all the troubles in this area, I would imagine that not many people will have the opportunity to see such wonderful reminders of the past. It looks epic in proportion, the figure helping us to gain some degree of scale.
A good use of the walls helps to contain the ruins within the frame but give tiny glimpses of potentials beyond. Fine sharpness.

you have so far just two photos from Syria but they are both very impressive, presenting very interesting locations. These ruins here allow us to appreciate the beauty of this place even though it is largely ruined.
Fantastic weather day and great light. The ruins contrast nicely with the uniformly blue sky.
