Photographer's Note

We are looking south from the middle of Sultanahmet Plaza. Of the two obelisks, the closer one is the Obelisk of Theodosius. In Turkish it is called, unimaginatively, Dikilitaş meaning obelisk (literally, erected stone). The further one is the Walled Obelisk or Masonry Obelisk (Turkish: Írme Dikilitaş). Both of them were erected during the Roman times. The Obelisk of Theodosius was brought over from Egypt in the 4th century AD. The Walled Obelisk is of Roman construct, date unknown.

The building in the background is the Republic Museum of Marmara University.
