Photographer's Note
Location: Moraine Lake, Banff National Park. This lake is only a short drive from Lake Louise. Both lakes are world famous for their beauty, but personally I like Moraine Lake more. Lake Louise had more of a "Disney Land theme park feel" while this lake felt a little wilder to me. Don’t get me wrong, both lakes are beautiful beyond what any photograph can capture, and I enjoyed seeing and trying to photograph both of them. I guess when something is so beautiful everyone wants to see it for themselves, and it’s impossible to maintain that feeling of “wilderness”. If you wake up early though (like any self respecting amateur photographer would) you can manage to see the Lakes at their best, and without 99% of the other tourists (just several other amateur photographers).
Sorry, I really got off on a tangent there.

Great image, I love the serenity suggested by the still water and foggy background and the great colors. The water reflection is amazing! One question, though: why did you frame it vertically (portrait-style)? I would have probably thought about a landscape framing...

Superb Shot Ryan;
I like contrast of the forground shore to the first bend, and how it slowly transforms to the misty/ painting like backdrop of the mountains. Really nice captured Ryan.

Hi Ryan,
I was here during the day with complete other light conditions.
And your so right, you have to be here early, very early to get the best light and the best pictures.
This is such a lovely image in such good light, it really makes me jealous seeing this.
I have to back sometime, someday.
Wonderful Ryan...very good..!!!
Have a nice weekend, Henk
P.S
Your right, Moraine lake is the place to be...!!!!

Hi Ryan.
Bref, top.

Hi Ryan,
Another magnificent shot from you. Good DOF with plenty of details. I really love how the way the reflections from the mountains and trees on the left leads me all the way to the sun lit mountains. Realy nice colors and the mood is spot on. TFS!

A gorgeous shot Ryan. The muted colours and composition are perfect. The refelctions, the foreground, the front-to-back sharpness - it's technically faultless.
I like your simple frame of the image too.

This is a really great shot. The viewpoint & low position of the camera gives a great image. The portrait style framing works very well here. Great colours, especially on the distant mountain peaks.

Ryan you rascal!! I love this lake and hope to hike up here next year. The setting here is gorgous indeed and the foreground and background details are very stunning. I think the water is a little tilted to the right though. It might be the wide angle lens though. Good shot indeed...thanks for sharing!

Nice pastel colors. Excellent DOF. The verticality helps to enhance the misty mountains. The water level is slightly tilted to the right and could be corrected easily without compromising the picture at all.

Hello Ryan,
Wow, what an amazing shot! I love this view of Moraine Lake. I agree that Moraine Lake gives a more natural and unspoiled feeling than Lake Louise, but yes they are both very beautiful. You captured Moraine Lake in all it's glory, showing off the pretty colours with the surrounding mountains as well as a beautiful reflection in the water! Great composition and well captured!

Oh my... I hope you won't think I am a complete maniac...
So. I deeply adore the picture, yet as flawless at it seems, I can't help but see it as being tilted.
Perhaps exactly because of the fact that it is so amazingly flawless in every other way, the slight tilt wriggles its way into my eyes and my brain, creating discomfort...
The worst part of it: it's only a tilt of 0.05 degrees. I played around with it in PS but being out of uploadeable pictures (and smileys) I won't post a WS. And it's only for a tilt! Argh!
Perhaps it's like with everything perfect: one notices the smallest ripple, whereas if there were plenty of ripples such a meaningless tilt would go unnoticed.
A perfect shot... a little tilted :D *oh I am so crazy* :P
Oh, and brilliant note. I agree with you 110% on the issue :D

I think that the vertical layout was the good one...It gives a nice perspective of this landscape.

Spectacular light on those mountains, Ryan--worth getting up early for, for sure! Excellent framing, with the clear watter and lack of ripples in the foreground emphasizing the stillness of the morning. The glacial blue-green of the water contrasts well with the misty gold of the mountains. Beautiful! Regards, Ken.

This is truly beautiful landscape photo. Long exposure of course blurred the water nicely (I love this effect but, unfortunataly, I cannot bring my tripod everywhere). For me, in this case, the most important is composition. The foreground details usualy bring a lot to a landspace picture, sometimes making a huge difference - from boring picture to interesting one. On your photo the foreground details - the wood and the rocks - are just perfectly composed. Very good job! Thanx.
BTW, do you still shot analog? Your new shots seems all to be digital.

Very pretty...well done. I think that a longer shutter speed would have given you a better reflection and I would love to see a little wider image of the mountains, but this is really nice. This makes me really want to go visit Canada... I would love to see what you could do with a large format camera.
Beautiful.

Fantastic shot! The composition is very good, and the light is excellent, with your exposure perfectly capturing the delicate morning. I like the soft and subtle colouration too, with pinks, light blues and greens mixing in a delightful palate. Superb, and now one of my favourites.

Hi Ryan
Another stunning view and composition of this special place in my hearth.
The rocks and the logs are a good introduction to a natural gorgeous scenery, which is enhanced by the early sun.
I usually see sunset view of this lake,in your morning view,I find that the scene is softer.
Good work

Hello Ryan,
When I look at this and read your note it takes me to a crisp blue sky day, the type where I just can't stand to be inside a moment longer than I have to be.
Have only ever stood on this spot when it was covered in snow - not to many problems with tourist, bears or other photographers that day as it was -35 with a wind chill.
Thanks for making this picture.

Hi Ryan:
How have I missed this one? A unique post of Moraine Lake. This is a tough one to be original with, but you've done a good job by not shooting from the Rockpile and by going with the vertical framing. Your Canada shots are fabulous--you should dig a few more up from the archives for us.
