Photographer's Note
This is a more edited version of the original photo called Disapproving Mother. Someone suggested that I crop the photo and darken the parts surrounding the mother and daughter.
I took this photo in the waiting room of a clinic that I was working in for several days in a remote part of Puebla in Mexico. I cropped the photo down to focus on the mother and daughter after noticing the disapproving look the mother is giving her daughter.
Let me know what you think about this version. Which looks better, this or the original?

Elizabeth,
Yes, I like what you have done. Your cropping worked well--glad you left in the mother's crossed arms-- and the way you darkened the other people's faces worked great.
Your original photo is very worthy itself because of the expressive faces of the many people, but I prefer this one.

The light is very good in catching all those expressions and how they fade out.

Hello Elizabeth,
What a fabulous photo, with the crowd of faces, those in the foreground so clear and lit, and those in the backround disappearing in degraded light. Beatifully composed and exposed image,

This version conveys your message more clearly as their faces are very expressively framed. I can just imagine what she is saying. Nicely done! I do like the view of the packed room in the original too and might consider just cropping the window area to give it that cluttered, busy rhythm. This shows that there are really two shots here--very interesting. Congratulations for your hard work in the clinic.

If Norman Rockwell would have taken any photos of Mexican life, this is about how his paintings woud have turned out. Very nice. Joop

Hi Elizabeth!
Beautiful picture. It looks like old Caravagio painting. I like POV and beautiful light focused on two women.
Beautiful capture.
IMHO this version looks better then original

Hi Elizabeth,
In my opinion, both pictures are nice. The original one is more "documental". It shows the amount of people there and their expressions, the size of the room...
This version has more atmosphere... it is more intim.
Good work!

Hello Elisabeth
Excellent idea, and a great result.
I must agree that this version is the best, so much more attention is put on the mother and her daughter.
Good composition and DOV t oreally focus the attention

hi elizabeth,
love this one...with all those sad faces packed in the vertical format - you even managed to achieve an effect as if the group were larger than it was in reality...the staring face, though, is the only "optimistic" one in the group - the light on her probably did it...
best wishes, j.
