Photographer's Note
One of my oldest photos - from my time in México. It would have been shot with a Pentax K-1000, using Fuji slide film - probably Sensia 100 ISO.
I am interested in some constructive criticism on this one, since I am not 100% convinced myself. I like the colours, which are very reminiscent of México and I like the basic composition and the positioning of the three and a half people.
I am tempted to crop a little more off the left of the picture, and my personal feeling is that the man on the right is too silhouetted - he really could have done with a few more features. The hazards of mid-day photography, I guess.

Hi Iain,
You could have croped but I don´t think it would change too much the essence of it, which is good. I like those daily life colorful shots. The only thing I would change (but you can´t because of the time you took it) is the shadow near the roof.
Cheers, Maurício

Good evening Iain
for my opinion it is a good photo, but it suffers an excess of contrast and saturation - that it is an effect of the scanner also -. I like the man entering and the man in silhouette also, very misterious. two persons on the left, instead, are a bit confused on the garment of bg.
have a nice day

Bonjour Iain,
J'aime les couleurs bien saturées de cette vieille diapositive.
La présence humaine donne une touche vivante à la composition.
Amicalement

hello Iain
I agree 100% with your own criticism of the picture. The colors are attractive, but too harsh and so agressive. I propose you a WS, to try to improve your picture.
Cheers

Hi Iain,
I remember using similar gear back in the day when I was travelling..an old Pentax (I posted a couple too here).
I think that a crop is not necessary as the shot has great width with the wider view. The silhouette, I think it adds mystery.
I like the saturation in it's own sense - it represents the imperfections of film or the equipment...but..for me, great gear and super perfect images are far less inportant than what is captured..and you have found a good image with character here.
I heard a saying from a great photographer (paraphrased): "The best camera in the world is the one you have with you".
Cheers

dear Iain,
the purple wall looks not earthly but in the air high above the ground,
shining all colors are vivid and impressive,
and dark shadow parts are charming too,
this strong contrast makes unusual ambience, it is so artistic too,
thank you for your fantastic art work picture,
Akihisa

Hola Iain :
Simpático encuadre de la tienda de "Modas Lupita"
.... colorido intenso y ese gusto por los contrastes
en el humilde comercio mexicano.
Un abrazo compañero.

Thanks Iain and I'm sorry for my delay.
Of course it's an eye catcher; the vivid colors are quite attractive as well as the principle of three depicted by the three people rushing to the door.
To answer your doubt, let me tell you it appears a tad too dark here on my monitor (wich I did'nt fine tune with a dedicated software, though)
Cheers.

well, with this colour the shop doesn't run the risk of being missed! And the photo too! (:-)
The writings on the wall are a highly graphic element which strike the eye and the presence of the local people adds interest.
Really Latin America!

Hello Iain,
This shop is very colorfully designed and nicely decorated. Your capture reproduces the color palette of the scene very well, creating a special atmosphere of the place. Very good composition and surprisingly high quality despite converting the image from a slide!
Best regards,

Hello Iain,
I like this high-saturated color and strong contrast, a person in black at the right side plays an important role to catch the eye.

Hi Iain, one of your oldest but it's a goody. The shadows here are what bother me and the lack of contrast. I suppose you could selectively brighten eaach of the people in the image. And then there's the other polemic, to clone or not to clone the overhead wires. Sometimes it's just too difficult or often takes away from the reality of the scene. If you send me the full-res image, I could possibly try something, but at this low-resolution, it's too dificult to do what I'm talking about. On a positive, I love the vibrant colours, the different textures and the sense of dynamism. Certainly a keeper this one. TFS and I hope "the strop" goes. I read your comments in the Forum, they're very valid. I'll try and find some time to contribute, as it all seems a right mess. But personally I think some people are taking themselves way too seriously. This is an amateur website where to my mind friendship and fun are the most important aspects. People leaving is truly like children saying "I'm taking my bat and ball and going home - and I'm going to delete all my photos that you spent hours critiquing". It punishes us, not the people they think they're punishing. Talk about TE being a microcosm of the world...just how wars are started - by ego, intolerance and failure to communicate. Anyways, I'll hopefully still see you here tomorrow :) Lisa

Hello Iain,
If it was really one of your first photos, than you took a strong start. The vivid colours really sell the picture and the composition and the positioning of the people on the photo is also nice.
Best Wishes,
Gy.
