F.D.N.Y. Engine 55

As a natural follow-up on my yesterday’s post, here’s a photo from a typical firehouse in New York.

On the 9/11, the FDNY lost 340 uniformed firefighters. There were 75 firehouses in which at least one member was killed.

Here’s the names of those who died while in duty, from Engine 55 Fire Station.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to say a prayer for these men. They are the true heroes of the XXI century like your title states.
Concerning the photo, somehow I think the composition would benefit a lot if you excluded the top floor. I know you can't do this while maintaining the 2/3 format, but I don't like those blue windows that much. They kind of break the chocolate and golden tones of the entire building. A landscape format catching only the red ground level would also work quite well. It's a great - very balanced - exposure once again. You clearly have mastered all the technicalities of the 5D.

Les casernes New-Yorkaises ont vraiment un look très particulier. Très différent du style Français ! On dirait presque l'entrée d'un théâtre ! Un truc m'intrigue : Qu'est ce qu'il y a à la fenêtre de droite en haut ? J'ai beau tenter l'agrandissement je ne reconnais oas. Merci de rendre gommage aux pompiers. Ils le méritent...

These firehouse places have still something mytical. Here in my town there is an ultra modern building, and from the outside you should not expect that the fire department is setteld in there. But here, yes here is a place we all were dreaming about when we were just a boy. The 55 sign is beautiful and is placed over the entry arch. Those two people standing in front make clear it's a routine day and they wait for the things to come. What i like best is the light that shines yellow and brighten up the reds...fantastic mood, brings this picture a level higher. The flag is essentiel, but just as Luis his remark, the top seems a bit weird. Removing is not done, so the blue from the windows you can give a different color ;-)
Whatever...the picture is self is something i like...very nice and warm and with a good note.

It's good to see that some of this triumphalistic, 19 century, civic architecture still survives in use. It certainly is a gem and beautifully lit. In the UK most of these have been pulled down or turned into bars. Nice colour and nice to get the fire-fighters looking watchfully out. regards kevin

J'adore le look de ces casernes new-yorkaises... un détail que j'avais oublié ou plutôt qui était relégué au fin fond de ma mémoire. J'aime la lumière qui donne une ambiance assez particulière à cette scène qui se présente comme un débuit de soiré tranquille. Les pompiers ont l'air décontracté en attendant que retentisse la sirène. Un bel hommage à ces hommes courageux. Tiens, tu pourrais les envoyer sur mon poste du jour car je crois bien qu'il y a le feu...

Ca quand meme l'air vachement plus calme a NYC qu'a Montreal au niveau incendies, faut dire qu'eux ils ont eu leur gros coup de feu en 2001. Une photo pre-nocturne ou tu as bien gere les lumieres et en effet une caserne de pompiers qui en jette. Le detail du hibou est amusant. J'espere que tu as degage avant que les cops viennent t'embarquer pour avoir photographie un lieu strategique...

What I really like about this photo is the combination of natural and artificial light, which gives the photo a very interesting color palette. The blue sky and the orange lights at the bottom compliment each other nicely creating a very interesting dynamic. I love the vertical composition to capture the tall building wedged between two others. I like those two firemen standing out in front, but the guy walking by bothers me a little. Since this photo is about the firemen I would rather that other guy wasn't in the shot talking on his cell phone. But on the other hand he doesn't take away from the greatness of this photo, and it’s a very nice tribute to the FDNY.

My hat off to you Andre.
You've at once captured a dramatic scene because of the evening light, and also commemorated a depressing event affecting quite a few people across the world. A sign of selfless sacrifice, these men save lives...say it, "SAVE LIVES". No matter individual faults, it is amazing when one person is willing to risk pain, sickness, death and sorrow to save another human...a touch of God maybe, or a sign of higher conciousness...who knows. You've done a wonderful job with the classic scene.

I just had a first look at your collection here and I must say that the first thing that impressesd me is your steady style. Balanced compositions, excellently framed, clear and crisp images, always having a wonderful palet of colours, optimally using the light.
Not always sponaneous shots but very carefully built images, I like this style, it's a pleasure for the eyes!

Does this image need to be titled? I can't quite tell! Nice capture this Andre. I don't think that this photo should be cropped in any way. It's a very nice building to look at and its good that you've included the two firemen (relaxing) in the photo. I also like the blue sky that we can see through the windows!

Nice shot of NYC. Good composition and exellent light. When I came to NYC the first time I had my low budget hotel on Broom street close to China Town and Little Italy. I love that area. Nino
