Photographer's Note
The current Grand Central Terminal was not the first railway station at 42nd street and As early as in 1863 Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as 'the Commodore' consolidated railroad lines including the Harlem Railroad and New York Central Railroad. As a result of the consolidation the need for a large railway station soon became apparent.
The building's facade on 42nd Street has a true beaux-arts design. Large arches flanked by Corinthian columns are topped by a large sculpture group designed by Jules-Alexis Coutain. The 50ft / 15m high group depicts Mercury (the god of commerce) supported by Minerva and Main Concourse, Grand Central Terminal The Main Concourse
Hercules (representing mental and moral strength).
Inside, the main concourse is most impressive. It is 470ft long, 160ft wide and 150ft high (143 x 49 x 43 meter). The ceiling is painted by the French artist Paul Helleu. The design with zodiac constellations was taken from a medieval manuscript. It is painted backwards, so the stars are shown as they would be seen by god, not by man. Light enters the main concourse through six 75ft / 23m arched windows. The western double staircase in Botticino marble was designed after the large staircase in the former Opera building in Paris. It connects the main concourse with the entrance on the Vanderbilt Avenue. The floor of the concourse is of Tennessee marble, the walls of Caen stone.

Ciao Rui
to find the railroad, to control the timetable of departure, the haste, the crowd, the encounter, the goodbyes. peoples in the stations always resemble themselves, and all of them make the same things. this photo suggests all this to me, with its empty spaces, the other full loads of people, and theirs to move like ghosts. a lot moving and interesting. I like it very much.
have a good week

Hi Rui,
A great photo taken in difficult lighting. The motion blur is great and creates an impression of rush hour. TFS and have a nice evening!
Cheers,
Ulf

It is interesting how those of us who have never been near the States recognise this hallway straight away - although with the Fisher King firmly in my memory I am expecting everyone to burst in to dance immediately.
I like the way you havew conveyed a sense of continuous movement through the logish exposure.
thanks and regards, Iain
