Photographer's Note
East Palo Alto is an incredibly economically depressed city about 25 miles south of San Francisco. It's across the highway from Palo Alto and the Stanford University two incredibly affluent areas. Outside the Catholic church there's a shrine to Saint Francis. This icon stands on a short pedestal and the icon itseld is about 4 feet tall. The church operates a soup kitchen and distributes food. People stand for sometimes an hour to receive a bag of basic groceries. People leave notes asking for divine intervention in their dire circumstances. Before getting in line a mother lifted her child and he placed this note on the saint's hand. I did not want to intrude and took the picture after they left. Cropped and cloned a pine needle from the upper left.
