Evidence of the Cold War is scattered through Angel Island State Park. This image was taken from a bunker looking back on the hills where just past the ridge lie concealed missile silos (active from 1955 to 1962). The stairs had vanished on this bunker, I believe I entered through a hole in the roof. Looking in the other direction out the discrete windows, you can clearly see San Francisco and the bridge, the prime targets that this station watched over.

This area has also served as a hunting ground for the Miwoks, a Civil War encampment, a quarantine station during the Spanish-American War, a discharge depot and recruitment processing center during World War I, an embarkation station and POW camp during World War II, and an Immigration Station often referred to as "The Ellis Island of the West" from 1910 through 1940.
