Photographer's Note

Seasoned by salt air, the coast to Sanfrancisco is a continuous spectacle of rocky shores, rugged bluffs, narrow inlets, sandy coves and a restless sea. The road winds sharply around headlands high above the ocean, offering dramatic views of the rugged coastline. A 90-mile stretch of this road is called Big Sur. The coastal highway is length flanked on one side by the Santa Lucia Mountains and on the other side by the rocky Pacific Coast.
Completed in 1937 after eighteen years of labour, the spectacular two-lane road provides a driving experience unsurpassed in natural beauty and scenic variety. It has been designated a National Scenic Byway, an honour reserved for highways that are so distinctive they are destinations unto themselves.
