Photographer's Note
This light is the third one constructed on this sight, first lit in 1872. It was placed between Cape Hatteras and Corolla to help guide sailing ships using the inshore south bound current over the Cape Hatteras shoals without getting into the northbound Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is important as it curves across the North Atlantic to help moderate the winters in France and England. The first order Fresnel lens is 156 ft ( 48 m) ASL(Above Sea Level)
