Photographer's Note
Cape Hatteras Light the third lighthouse in this series is situated in Buxton, North Carolina, is 42 mile (67km) south of Bodie Island Light in my previous post. It is probably the most photographed lighthouse in the US Right up there with Portland Head Light in Maine as it is easily accessed by car over route 12 and several free ferries.
Built in 1870 Hatteras is the tallest in the US, with the focal plane of its first order Fresnel lens at 191 ft(58m) and is visible for 28 statute miles ( 24 nautical miles, 44km) and in exceptional conditions 51mi (91km) .
The entire length of the Outer Banks of North Carolina are barrier islands from the Virginia border just north of Corolla to Cape Lookout. They are composed of continually shifting sand with several with inlets opening during strong storms and hurricanes. The erosion of shifting sands threatened Hatteras light and in 1999-2000 it was moved 2870 ft (870 m) inland. More information can be viewed at :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Hatteras_Light.
